(aka 'Boom Town!')

Directed by Jack Conway
USA 1940

Romantic comedy with a top-notch cast. Gentle Tracy and macho Gable are the buddies who head out West to try their luck making a fortune in the oilfields. Unfortunately, they run across Colbert who has turned up in the hope of making her fortune by marrying it and soon the two men are battling over her. It all starts to go badly wrong, though, when Lamarr arrives on the scene to teach them all about love and money. The performances from the four leads are sparkling and vintage character actors Wills and Atwill provide solidly eccentric support.

Comments:

This is an exceptionally clean and clear image from Warner. Hard to believe this print is 65 years old - it is in magnificent shape with virtually no damage marks - even when they show they are quite minor. Digital noise is minutely prevalent but almost non-existent with insignificant artefacting in some of the open sky scenes. Detail is very strong and grey-tones are a bit weaker than we have seen in previous Warner classic releases. Overall though a stunning image with consistent mono audio. Extras include a short and a cartoon, along with the theatrical trailer.

The 4 major stars of the film work like clockwork together and the film is very good adventure drama - I'm surprised I wasn't aware of its existence before.
