(aka 'Good Morning, Night')
Directed by
Marco Bellocchio
Italy 2003
Internationally acclaimed and award-winning director Marco Bellocchio (My Mother's Smile, Devil in the Flesh) delivers a film of devastating emotional power based on the shocking true story of the 1978 kidnapping and murder of Italy's former Prime Minister. A young woman, Chiara, moves into a new apartment with her husband. On the surface she lives a routine existence, but all is not as it seems. She conceals her true identity as a member of The Red Brigades, Italy's terrorist underground, which is currently planning to kidnap the Prime Minister. Passionate about a revolutionary utopia, Chiara's suspicions and doubts grow and she questions, both emotionally and ideologically, her commitment and acts.

Due to the apparent video and audio weaknesses in the Wellspring DVD we strongly recommend the Region 2 PAL Artificial Eye release reviewed by Henrik Sylow HERE. It has the same extras, a 5.1 option and better subtitles as well. | ||

I don't know about other Wellspring DVD issues of this film but the one I own has significant audio fluctuations and in 2 separate spots complete drops were noted. Dialogue at times is inaudible even at 5 times usual volume levels and at approx. the 5:00 minute mark the fireworks sequence was excessively loud even at volume level 1 on my system. I suspect that the disc should be recalled, but I will wait to hear from others with the same problem - we will post here. The video transfer is likewise weak - although it appears to have been converted to the correct NTSC standard it is still rife with 'combing' - indicating a non-high definition source. There is a black border around the edge of the image limiting horizontal resolution. This disc neither looks or sounds acceptable to me. We have reviewed the Region 2- UK edition HERE and it is a significant improvement in all areas (presently it is expensive though). |
