(aka "Good Morning, Night" or "Buongiorno, notte" )

directed by Marco Bellocchio
Italy 2003

"Good Morning, Night" is based upon the real event of the kidnapping of Italy's former prime minister Aldo Moro in 1978, and portraits the members of the Red Brigades, the reason behind their actions and how their emotional struggles parallel the escalading national crisis, as one of the members begins to question the cause.

Bellocchio avoids investigating ideology of the Red Brigades, and reason for the kidnapping, but by beautifully composed sequences shows the increasing disillusionment of the cause in Chiara, who begins to fantasize about releasing Moro, and finally realizes that fascism remains fascism, no matter what flag or ideology is behind it.

An extremely powerful and thought provoking film, especially today, where the western world is fixated on terrorism.

Comments While the night sequences are flawless and so very beautiful in their soft composition, the day sequences suffers from edge enhancements and colours are very faded.

The frame also appears to have been slightly cropped from its OAR of 1.85:1.

The documentary "Same Rage, Same Spring" is a portrait of Bellocchio, where he talks about his films, his motifs and how he made "Good Morning, Night". A very insightful piece of extra material.
