(aka 'Er Woo Dong: The Entertainer' or ''Eoudong' or 'Eo woo-dong')

Directed by Chang-Ho Lee
South Korea 1985

Kind of an interesting film with a decent narrative that gets slightly derailed with healthy does of actress Lee Bo Hee's sexuality (waiting for Between the Knees on disc) - mostly showing her occasionally naked torso, buttocks and back plus her suggestive glances in the cameras direction. She actually gives a strong performance and the film shows nothing particularly explicit - well, a bit. There are some beautiful scenes and use of color is excellent - certainly it is appears marketed with her visual appeal in mind (see the poster, the DVD keep case inside the cardboard box that has her once again almost naked and the trailer tries this on a bit too). I realize that the use of her feminine charms are a bit part of her character (a crafty courtesan using manipulation for advancement)  but the obvious capitalizing of it after kind of cheapens the production to some degree. Still, I think this film has something to offer with the continued Asian theme of women existing in a strongly male-dominated era. Many may enjoy it!

Eoudong is one of the most famous erotic dramas in Korean cinema history, and lead actress Lee Bo Hee took home the Best Actress award at the Korean Film Awards for her role as the eponymous heroine.

During the Chosun dynasty, the strict laws of Confucianism permeated an already male-dominant society. Eo Wu-Dong was born into a respectful, aristocratic family, but when she falls in love with a man of obscure birth, society tears them apart. Enraged by the rules of the aristocracy, Wu-Dong runs away, planning to take her own life if she cannot be with the man she loves. However a woman named Hyang-Ji intervenes, leading Wu-Dong to choose a different path. She becomes a courtesan and sets out to make the aristocrats her slaves, by using the only weapon she has - her body.

Comments:

Like Chunhyang, Sopyonje and Madam Freedom Spectrum are continuing to progressively transfer some relatively unknown, in the west, Korean films onto DVD with optional English subtitles. This image is very good - detailed with excellent colors and no untoward manipulation. I suspect it is very accurate to the theatrical films appearance. The DVD does have a slim border around the edge slightly limiting horizontal resolution but the anamorphic image is artifact-free. Audio was unremarkable but consistent and clear. Supplements are quite limited to a trailer and some static screens. This is an erotic movie with smok'in Bo-Hee Lee and strong themes!

NOTE: This was remade in 2015 as Lost Flower Eo Woo-dong!
