The Mutual Film Corporation built Charles Chaplin his own studio and he entered a fruitful twelve-month period which he acknowledged to be one of the most inventive and liberating of his career. Chaplin had full control over casting, scripting and directing. This first volume (reviewed HERE) contains Behind the Screen, The Rink, Easy Street, The Cure, The Immigrant and The Adventurer. This 2nd Volume, films all made in 1916, has The Floorwalker, The Fireman, The Vagabond, One A.M., The Count and The Pawnshop.
The resourceful and enduring character of the "The Tramp" is seen in the early years of his evolution. It is easy to see the painstaking detail Chaplin went to to produce these gems of cinema that we still hold with immense appeal value almost 90 years later.

Unfortunately this DVD is not at the standard of Volume 1 (reviewed HERE) released almost 2 years previously. Again BFI states on the box that 'All titles have been restored and mastered from the best available materials...' but despite that the transfers are all very weak - none are progressively encoded and the 'combing' is quite noticeable (I had trouble containing captures free of the 'trailing' artifact) as are instances of chroma sporadically rearing an ugly head throughout the dual-layered disc. The intertitles are quite consistently poor (see sample below) and in all 6 shorts the image is bordered by a thick black bar effectively minimizing full resolution (see sample below). There is some extensive damage in certain parts that either was not present or extensively cleaned in the Volume 1 DVD package. The Carl Davis scores are very good. One A.M. is tinted. These are great Chaplin films but I
suspect, in this case, the Region 1 releases may be superior. It may be
that BFI have changed there DVD authoring house to a more frugal one
because this is the third new release of theirs that has prevalent
'combing' indicating a non-progressive transfer. |
