The Mutual Film Corporation built Charles Chaplin his own studio and he entered a fruitful twelve-month period which he acknowledged to be one of the most inventive and liberating of his career. Chaplin had full control over casting, scripting and directing. This first volume contains Behind the Screen, The Rink, Easy Street, The Cure, The Immigrant and The Adventurer. The tone varies from the slapstick comedy of Behind the Screen to Chaplin's sensitive portrayal of The Immigrant. All titles have been restored and mastered from the best available materials and feature new scores by Carl Davis.
The resourceful and enduring character of the "The Tramp" is seen in the early years of his evolution. It is easy to see the painstaking detail Chaplin went to to produce these gems of cinema that we still hold with immense appeal value almost 90 years later.

I am VERY
impressed with the BFI Region 2 Chaplin Mutuals Collection Volume 1. The
image quality is exceptional (and in proper ratio) and the sound is even
better. I don't have the Image Region 1's to compare to, but I do notice
that the Region 2's have the same films that the three disc Image
Entertainment editions do, but spread over only 2 discs, and they are in
perfect chronological order on the BFI discs. I can't imagine the Region
1's being better in the image or sound quality either. I think the
Region 1's have Michael Mortilla’s musical score which has been revised, newly performed and recorded in digital stereo,
where similarly the Region 2's have Carl Davis' wonderful score.
The only short that shows highly visible damage is the final one "The Adventurer", but my estimation is the rest look as good as they did when first shown. The BFI edition has three Extra Features - footage of Chaplin returning to Britain, a Carl David interview and some text bios of Edna Purviance and consummate villain and Tramp nemesis Eric Campbell. This is as wonderful a
DVD as I own. |
