directed by George Cukor
USA 1936

Garbo's most famous, most popular roles and arguably her best was in this, Cukor's lavish adaptation of Dumas's novel. Beautifully evoking the gay Paris of the mid 19th century, it is the story of an extravagant courtesan who falls for the ambitious Armand (a stiff Taylor). She is warned off by his father (Barrymore, excellent), who fears for his son's future should he marry such a flighty woman. She leaves, only to spend the rest of her life consumed by poverty and terminal illness. A real tearjerker ending emphasizes how much the camera loved Garbo, and you will too.

Comments:

A beautiful film, but the beginning of the print used is in rough shape with lots of scratches and small damage marks. Of course the film is almost 70 years old so some wear and tear is expected but as the film moves into the final 2/3 the image improves quite drastically. Close-ups still show that grainy digital noise appearance but I've never found that bothersome. A unique bonus included with this DVD is the 1921 version (with Rudolph Valentino). It, unfortunately looks quite hazy and weak (as expected) and it was transferred non-progressively. So, good audio, good subs, good contrast, just be forewarned of the weakness of the silent edition and the beginning of the main feature. Fabulous film though and another Garbo entrancing performance

It stands that the Garbo Signature Collection is a great buy at less than $100 for 10 discs - many of which are highly sought films.
