This TCM Archives 2-disc The Garbo Silents Collection focuses on Garbo's earliest years in Hollywood. In The Temptress (1926, Disc 2) Garbo establishes her magnetic screen persona as a vamp who destroys the lives of men who cannot resist her charms. In Flesh and the Devil (1927, Disc 1), she is an irresistible vixen who comes between lifelong friends John Gilbert and Lars Hanson, and in The Mysterious Lady (1928, Disc 2), a Russian spy who seduces her victims. Each film contributed mightily in building the Garbo legend that still manages to fascinate audiences almost 80 years later.

A melodrama of frustrated desire played out in an endless succession of sumptuously curtained boudoirs, this 1926 film established Greta Garbo as the silent era's most alluring enigma. The tragedy of Garbo's career is that she lent her presence to so many mediocre films, and this Clarence Brown effort (his first of many with Garbo) is no exception. Turgid and stiff, it finds the magic only occasionally.

Of the three feature films in this DVD set, this image looks the best. Good contrast and bright intertitles it still shows some degree of sharpness some almost 80 years later. There is minor damage. The commentary is insightful focusing a lot on Garbo herself. The documentary on the development of the new score might only be of interest to a small few, but the alt-ending has some legitimate value and although the montage is filler - it looks fantastic. |

"The
Mysterious Lady" is good, not great, silent spy melodrama with Garbo
perfectly cast in the title role, looking alluring even with her wavy curly
hairstyle, a few years before Garbo's transformation to her more famous long
straight hair. Conrad Nagel is satisfactory as her co-star, but no threat to
Garbo's more famous leading man, John Gilbert, who might have made a go in the
part of Karl.
While "The Mysterious Lady" had been available on video cassette for a number of
years now, accompanied by the same musical score that originated from 1973's
public television presentation of "Movies-Great-Movies," as hosted by Richard
Schickel on WNET, Channel 13, in New York City to commemorate MGM's fiftieth
anniversary, Turner Classic Movies premiered this silent melodrama June 5, 2002,
with an all-new soundtrack conducted by Vivek Maddana. Although the new score is
at times satisfactory, I feel that it is totally unnecessary to score a silent
movie that has been scored already, especially when the old score succeeds in
setting the mood and pace to the story. With the setting of "The Mysterious
Lady" taking place in Vienna, the new Maddana score in parts gives the
impression that the storyline takes place in Venice, Italy. Originally
distributed at 98 minutes, the TCM presentation of "The Mysterious Lady"
plays at 89 minutes.

There is a lot of visible damage in the print used for this transfer. The image has some cloudy/hazy moments but not far off what you might expect from something this old. The scratches do detract somewhat from the film but it certainly gives you a sense of what you are watching. The commentary is another good one with lots of interesting tidbits. I actually liked the short film with Garbo included as an extra and the montage sequence looks outstanding. |

THE TEMPTRESS, an important project that helped advanced the screen career of Greta Garbo, at long last, premiered January 24, 2005, on Turner Classic Movies cable channel, accompanied by a new score composed by Michael Picton. Scoring a silent movie is challenging, as mentioned in the half hour special that preceded the movie, and minutes into watching THE TEMPTRESS, the result of Picton's work is satisfactory and rewarding. In spite the fact that host Bob Osborne announced THE TEMPTRESS as making its world television premiere, it actually did play on television, but many years ago. THE TEMPTRESS was one of the selected 13 silent films shown weekly on the public television series in commemoration of MGM's fifty years titled "Movies-Great-Movies," (WNET, Channel 13, in New York City from August to October of 1973) hosted by Richard Schickel, movies accompanied by an an orchestral score (and in the New Jersey area as part of the 1974 series, "Films of the Gatsby Era," with same movies, different hosts, on WNJM, Channel 50). THE TEMPTRESS made its final TV run on WNET in the spring of 1978 when it became part of the double bill five week movie tribute to Garbo and Katharine Hepburn. Schickel, as did Osborne, talked about how Garbo's discoverer, Mauritz Stiller, started out as the film's director, but due to complications during production, was replaced by Fred Niblo. The information regarding THE TEMPTRESS remains the same, with the exception of its time length. When shown in the 1970s, the running time was about 114 minutes. TCM's print runs at 105. But regardless of its length, possibly due to projection speed, THE TEMPTRESS is a welcome addition to the TCM lineup, and well worth viewing again after many years or the first time ever. While THE TEMPTRESS belongs to Antonio Moreno, whose name is almost forgotten today, it owes its success to the temptress herself, Greta Garbo, which is the sole reason for its rediscovery.

This again shows some damage marks, but overall is quite a consistent image and probably as sharp as possible considering the condition of the source. I was actually quite keen on Niblo framing in this film. The Vieria commentary is another strong one and a nice touch to add it to the alt-ending sequence. You have a real sense of Hollywood history here when you watch these three films and Garbo's allure comes through in spades. |
