Based on Matsumoto Seicho's best selling novel, Yoshitaro Nomura's (Demon, Zero Focus) The Castle of Sand, is a fascinating mystery/thriller which subtly weaves three separate stories together (one a brilliantly realized flashback of the past). A veteran and a rookie detective are searching for a murderer of an elderly cop at a Tokyo railway station. Although initially it may seem a standard 'police story' it evolves quite handsomely into a complex and tightly structured human drama about unsuccessfully attempting to escape your past. The well-bound conclusion helps signify this as a very worthy viewing experience. Close to a masterpiece. Very highly recommended.

Sometimes I state that the DVD looks superior to the posted screen caps, but in this instance I think it definitely looks worse. Rife with combing the non-anamorphic and non-progressive image is a mess with blown-out saturated colors, scratches and damage prevalent. The aspect ratio is 1.61 but I'll wager it should be much wider (IMdb says 2.35). It has one of the lowest bitrates I have seen in a while. Even the subtitles take a brief break in the middle. There are no digital extras. This is a bad DVD. So, as the DVD is very weak I only recommend this as a purchase for the film itself which I feel deserves far better. If anyone knows about an alternative release of this very strong film please let me know. The only real positive about this Panorama DVD is that it allowed me to see the film. |
