Directed by Robert Mulligan
USA 1965

Steve McQueen stars as a rockabilly hopeful, newly paroled from prison, and Lee Remick as his estranged wife in Baby the Rain Must Fall (1965), brought to us by the same triumvirate that translated To Kill a Mockingbird to the screen in 1962: writer Horton Foote, producer Alan J. Pakula, and director Robert Mulligan. A poignant slice of life shot in and around Foote’s Texas hometown, the film is highlighted by a score from the singular Elmer Bernstein and lovely cinematography by the great Ernest Laszlo.

Henry Thomas (Steve McQueen), a singer and guitarist in a rock band, is on parole for a violent crime. Henry's wife, Georgette (Lee Remick), and daughter, Margaret Rose (Kimberly Block), travel to Texas to be with him as he attempts to repair his relationships and put his life back together. Henry's overbearing foster mother, Kate Dawson, doesn't approve of Henry's musical aspirations and uses the terms of his parole to force him to comply with her wishes.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Twilight Time Blu-ray (May 2019): Twilight Time have transferred 1960's Baby the Rain Must Fall to Blu-ray. It can look a shade faint and even bleached at times but the close-ups show impressive detail and grain support. The 1080P image supports the precise and inventive cinematography of the great Ernest Laszlo. The transfer has a high bitrate and it looks clean, with no speckles, and very pleasing in HD.

On their Blu-ray, Twilight Time use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel mono track (16-bit) in the original English language. There are only minor aggressive effects. The score from Elmer Bernstein (Midas Run, Report to the Commissioner, Kings of the Sun, Hud, To Kill a Mockingbird, Summer and Smoke) sounds excellent ion the uncompressed. Twilight Time offer optional English subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

The Twilight Time Blu-ray has only a trailer and some liner notes by Julie Kirgo.

Baby the Rain Must Fall is a multi-layered drama with strong characterizations. I love both leads and was very keen on my viewing. It's another winner Blu-ray. from Twilight Time. Recommended despite the bare-bones status.
