directed by George Cukor
USA 1933

Adapted from a stage play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, "Dinner at Eight" presents intersecting stories set during America's Great Depression that illustrate the rough passage from the old aristocracy, based on European customs and ancestral wealth, to the new aristocracy, hewn out of the free-for-all of 20th-century capitalism. Packed with capable actors allowed to shine in intimate, dialogue-heavy, extended takes, the movie offers an interesting study of culture, a thoughtful lesson on life, and an entertaining series of touching and amusing tales.

Comments:

Another good Warner release, if very grainy. As typical with Warner recent releases of their old catalogue this looks excellent and their restoration process appears to have done th best job it could. I love film grain and this is not impinging upon the viewing experience in the least. Subtitles, original audio, superb shadow detail and bonus extra features are all top notch ! Looks like this new Classic Comedies Boxset is as complete as their Film Noir and Gangster package releases. Keep it up Warner - we love you!
