(aka "Port of Call" )
Strongly influenced by the neorealist films of Roberto Rossellini, Port of Call is Ingmar Bergman’s most naturalistic work. Shot on location in the port of Göteborg by Gunnar Fischer (who would become one of the director’s key collaborators), the film focuses on the tentative relationship between Gösta (Bengt Eklund), a sincere, easygoing seaman, and Berit (Nine‑Christine Jönsson), a suicidal young woman from a broken home. As Berit reveals more about her troubled past, and the couple confront many harsh realities in the present, a meaningful bond begins to form between them. With this confident and disciplined feature, his fifth, Bergman tackled moral and social issues head-on. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. The Criterion Blu-ray of Port of Call is part of their Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema 100th Anniversary 30 Blu-ray Boxset (reviewed, as a work in-progress, HERE). Port of Call shares this Blu-ray with Thirst. See comparative captures, a listing of technical details, extras etc., on this page. We've compared it to Criterion's first Eclipse Boxset "Early Bergman". The 1080P is a significant upgrade as evidenced by the matched screen captures. It starts with this source-indicator text screen that indentifies that it was restored in 2016 from a 35mm 'dup negative'.
It has uncompressed linear PCM audio in the original Swedish with optional English subtitles. There are no extras. NOTE: Yes, as has been leaked, we can now confirm that this Blu-ray set is Region FREE! |
