(aka "Thirst" )
Intricately structured and technically accomplished, Thirst is an often dazzling examination of people burdened by the past and united in isolation. The principal couple, Bertil (Birger Malmsten) and Ruth (Eva Henning), travel home by train to Sweden from Switzerland, at each other’s throats the whole way. Meanwhile, in Stockholm, Bertil’s former lover, Viola (Birgit Tengroth, who also wrote the stories on which the film is based), tries to evade the predatory advances of her psychiatrist, and then of a ballet dancer who was once a friend of Ruth’s. With this dark and multilayered drama, sustained by biting dialogue, Ingmar Bergman began to reveal his profound understanding of the female psyche. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. The Criterion Blu-ray of Thirst is part of their Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema 100th Anniversary 30 Blu-ray Boxset (reviewed, as a work in-progress, HERE). Thirst shares this Blu-ray with Port of Call. See comparative captures, a listing of technical details, extras etc., on this page. We've compared it to Criterion's first Eclipse Boxset "Early Bergman". The 1080P is a significant upgrade as evidenced by the matched screen captures. It starts with this source-indicator text screen that indentifies that it was restored in 2017 from a 35mm 'dup negative'.
It has uncompressed linear PCM audio in the original Swedish with optional English subtitles. There are no extras. NOTE: Yes, as has been leaked, we can now confirm that this Blu-ray set is Region FREE! |
