The third feature by celebrated director Radu Jude (Aferim!, and the recent award-winning I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians), is a caustic and compelling black comedy of family strife.

Recently divorced husband Marius plans to take his young daughter away on a weekend holiday. When things do not go as planned, Marius strikes out at those around him, and what began as comic drama soon turns bitter as Marius' increasingly erratic behaviour and morbid self-pity send the film spiralling into much darker territory.

A key work of the Romanian New Wave, Jude's pressure-cooker drama is an honest, unflinching and often hilariously profane portrait of one man's disintegrating mental health as his life and marriage crumble around him.

ADDITION: Second Run Blu-ray (May 2019): S2012's "Everybody in Our Family" is transferred to a dual-layered Blu-ray thanks to Second Run. The film has a high bitrate, which helps sustain the image for a film that is almost constantly in motion with a handheld camera. The level of detail in the image is in line with most modern films of the era, though the fluid camerawork may give the film a less defined image when in motion. The various settings create a sense of claustrophobia with knickknacks and toys surrounding the characters in almost every room. Even outdoors in the market, the surroundings are almost suffocating. Thankfully, colors seem lifelike and the decent range of blacks show an acceptable contrast.

The Second Run Blu-ray lets us choose between a 24-bit 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio track and a 16-bit linear PCM track. There is no score for the film, though the credits feature "Black Cat Tango" by Osamu. The Romanian dialogue comes fast and frequently, so the English subtitles help to translate as best they can. This is a Region Free Blu-ray from Second Run.

There is a new and exclusive filmed interview with Radu Jude lasting 26-minutes. The director explains how he came to end up working in film, starting in childhood and later college, culminating in his discovery of the Romanian cinemateque. He goes on to talk about "Everybody in Our Family" in detail, amidst accompanying scenes from the film. Also included here are two of the director's short films; the 2006 "The Tube with a Hat" (24-minutes) and 2007's "Alexandra" (25 minutes). The film's trailer rounds out the Blu-ray. There is also a 16-page booklet with new essay on the film by critic and journalist Carmen Gray.

This is a very dark and frustrating comedy, well deserving of its many accolades. Second Run have a Blu-ray featuring a nice transfer, with 2 choices of audio tracks. The extras include 2 short films from the director, which show his style and skill, especially working with child actors. Recommended to fans of dark-comedy and world cienma.
