The OOP MPI has more accurate
directional subtitles. The new Apple has a better picture along with better sound. Print damage is also lessened in the new Apple version. The new commentary is laid back and has many dry spells. The new documentary is the real star with much of the material not used in the original film now organized with a great behind the scenes feel. It is now clear that much of the material for The Beatles Anthology disc 2 part 3 comes from the Maysles outtakes! The Sullivan Set has all 4 complete telecasts which provides 20 songs, 14 songs from 1964 and 6 songs from 1965. The Maysles' film only has 10 from Sullivan's 1964 telecasts. The Ed Sullivan shows are presented in full, even with the old commercials. It is like taking a trip back in time, for some it reliving history but for others who just want the Beatles, it would be extraneous. At times the Sullivan set can have more picture detail, but I find the overall grayscale better in the new Apple. The Sullivan's 5.1 sound in not 5.1, it is music and dialog on center and audience in the surrounds. The Beatles Anthology is another creature all together. It has elements from the Ed Sullivan Show, Maysles film & outtakes. The Anthology does a great job of fitting it all together. One example is when John does a long distance phone interview with an England radio station from the hotel while waiting to go to Ed Sullivan. The filming of his side of the conversion is in the Maysles doc. in full but in rough form. The Anthology uses that and fills in the actual voice of the British interviewer along with Pictures so that a two sided conversion is presented in the Anthology. The Anthology because of run time, can not present all the songs, but when it does the sound is in DTS and sounds as good as it will ever get. |
