Directed by Peter Markle
USA 1986
Are you ready for exhilarating speed, invigorating competition and skating so sharp-edged you can feel the ice spraying in your face? Then prepare yourself for YOUNGBLOOD! Showcasing the talents of Rob Lowe (The Hotel New Hampshire, St. Elmo’s Fire) and Patrick Swayze (Point Break, Ghost), Youngblood is fist-flying, stick-smashing, body-checking thrills right up to the final buzzer. Teenager Dean Youngblood (Lowe) has out-skated just about everybody since he was six. Now he's set his sights toward National Hockey League fame with the ragtag Hamilton Mustangs, an amateur Canadian team just across the border from his family's farm. Certain that his swift moves on the ice will dazzle the crowds, Dean quickly learns that his speed and finesse won't pack enough punch against the bad boys of the league, the Thunder Bay Bombers. And when the Mustangs' top scorer (Swayze) gets knocked out, Dean has to turn from a rookie to an all-star fast. Directed by Peter Markle (Bat 21) and featuring Cynthia Gibb (Modern Girls), Ed Lauter (Breakheart Pass), Jim Youngs (The Wanderers) and Keanu Reeves (River’s Edge). *** Rob Lowe stars as the title character, a young hockey prodigy with a gift for scoring, but no such penchant for pugilism -- when the gloves drop, so does he. Despite his fragility, Coach Chadwick (Ed Lauter) takes him on the roster for his stick-handling ability alone. However, he ends up being sent home after being singled out by a particularly nasty goon, Racki (George Finn), who pummels the "pretty boy" in brutal fashion. Disheartened, Youngblood heads back to the rural Canadian farm he calls home, where his father (Eric Nesterenko, a former player for the Chicago Blackhawks) and older brother (Jim Youngs) teach him the invaluable lesson that hockey is "no place for a nervous person" (to quote a famous NHL announcer). Overseen by his elders, he immediately begins a combat-training regimen to prepare for his return and imminent showdown with the evil Racki; meanwhile, he strikes up a relationship with the coach's daughter (Cynthia Gibb). |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.
Kino Lorber bring the 80's hockey drama Youngblood to
Blu-ray. It's on a
single-layered
Blu-ray
in 1080P. There is grain and the HD exports rich reds and blues - it
looks very good - the best I have seen the film. Depth is present and
layered contrast. Perhaps some minor noise in a few darker sequences but
nothing fatal. |
