(aka "Let the Sunshine In")
Directed by Claire Denis
France 2017
Two luminaries of French cinema, Claire Denis and Juliette Binoche, unite for the first time in this piercing look at the elusive nature of true love, and the extent to which we are willing to betray ourselves in its pursuit. In a richly layered performance, Binoche plays Isabelle, a successful painter in Paris whose apparent independence belies what she desires most: real romantic fulfillment. Isabelle reveals deep wells of yearning, vulnerability, and resilience as she tumbles into relationships with all the wrong men. Shot in burnished tones by Denis’s longtime collaborator Agnès Godard and featuring a mischievous appearance by Gérard Depardieu, Let the Sunshine In finds bleak humor in a cutting truth: we are all, no matter our age, fools for love. *** Divorced French painter Isabelle (Juliette Binoche) experiences romantic highs and heartbreak while dealing with three imperfect suitors (Xavier Beauvois, Nicolas Duvauchelle, and Alex Descas). Despite not believing she can really find true love, she continues to hopefully pursue relationships with these flawed men, who fail her because of their own hang-ups and expectations. Directed by Claire Denis. Gérard Depardieu co-stars. Excerpt from B+N located HERE |

NOTE:
The below
Blu-ray
captures were taken directly from the
Blu-ray
disc.
Criterion have included "Voilà l’enchaînement", a 2014 short film
directed by Denis, based on a text by "Let the Sunshine In" cowriter
Christine Angot, featuring actors Norah Krief and Alex Descas as a couple
whose relationship is imploding. This short was made while Denis was
teaching at the French school Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts
contemporains. Also here is a brand new 20-minute interview with Denis, as
well as a 17-minute interview with Binoche. The two interviews are both so
genuine and revealing that they stand out among the typical PR-based fluff.
Criterion also feature the film's trailer. The
Blu-ray
package contains an essay by
critic Stephanie Zacharek that was sadly not available to read as of this
writing, as well as a cover by Sarah Habibi. |
