ONE VOICE (not Ellsworth Monkton Toohey): This past week, I was very impressed with Masters of Cinema's Blu-ray of Ruggles of Red Gap - what a fabulous film and marvelous Dual-Format package. Criterion deserves top mention for their transfer of Ingmar Bergman’s tenth film, Summer Interlude - a must-own for fans of master filmmaker. Markus Schleinzer's restrained Michael is a very worthwhile film experience and Artificial Eye have produced an important Blu-ray edition. Oscilloscope Laboratories create some super digital packages and their Blu-ray of Lynne Ramsay's We Need to Talk About Kevin is very much recommended! Wow. Olive Films have produced Blu-rays of previously unreleased films by John Cassavetes and Nicholas Ray. Too Late Blues was the second feature film by legendary director Cassavetes - while not at the level of his more renowned works - is still a desirable spin. Ditto for Run For Cover - a James Cagney western directed by the great Nicholas Ray. We get more of Lamberto Bava's Italian splatter with Demons 2 by Arrow Films in the UK. The Woman in Black is an entertaining horror in the classic spooky sense with - now available on Blu-ray. Redemption (Kino) continue to pump out Jean Rollin's sexual vampire-centric films on Blu-ray and have Requiem For a Vampire, Demoniacs and the exploitive-ly titled The Rape of the Vampire. Byron Haskin made some spunky westerns in the 50's including Silver City and Denver and Rio Grande - both offered as modest Blu-ray transfers. While holding some potential and the grindhouse homage was appreciated we don't recommend the 2008 Female Convict Scorpion film on Blu-ray. We have another handful of DVD review this week - despite the digitization softness of Second Run's restored Mother Joan of Angels, it handily eclipses the original release. Eclipse Series 33: Up All Night with Robert Downey Sr. offers some goofy, political, amusing and thought-provoking - all intentional - efforts by an irreverent filmmakers of the 60's New York underground. Eric did some revealing comparisons and reviews of his own wrong-side-of-the-tracks niche of interest including the Horror / Mystery / Thriller Plot of Fear, the similar camp genres in a double-feature package of Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things + Dead of Night. Meridian has Sherilyn Fenn returning to Italy and her family's ancestral castle. The Squad is a rare crossover in a Horror/War film with heavy overtones of paranoia.... Have a great week!

Requiem For a Vampire BD - Two girls disguised as clowns have broken a convict associate out of prison. When he is shot during a car chase, they abandon the vehicle and their disguise and take off on foot. After using their wits and their figures to steal food and escaping being buried alive in a cemetery, they eventually find themselves in a remote castle inhabited by a clan of vampires. If not for the abundant nudity (and a sadistic, red-tinted sequence of the vampires attacking women in chains), this lyrical film would make an ideal companion piece to the Czech fantasy VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS or even Rollin's underrated TWO ORPHAN VAMPIRES. Blu-ray Release Date: May 29th, 2012

Demoniacs BD - Tanya (Joelle Coeur) and her team of wreckers lure ships to crash on the rocks in order to scavenge their cargo. One night, they discover two beautiful shipwrecked survivors who they proceed to rape and leave for dead. At the local tavern (festooned with macabre set decoration by Belgian designer Jio Berk of THE NUDE VAMPIRE and DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE), the drunken Captain experiences persecuting visions of the blood-covered girls so Tina leads them back to the scene of the crime only to discover the girls are still alive. They attempt to kill the girls again but they escape to an old abbey where they encounter a clown who introduces to the to a demon who by making love to them (of course) gives them supernatural powers to take vengeance on the wreckers who are already turning on each other out of guilt and paranoia. Blu-ray Release Date: May 29th, 2012

The Rape of the Vampire BD - In Jean Rollin's sexy and gothic debut film, four beautiful French women, who are led to believe that they are vampires, are being held up in a seaside chateau. One by one, they are meticulously murdered by the nervous and unsure townsfolk until they are resurrected from the dead and joined by ''The Queen of the Vampires''. Part of a trilogy that also includes Requiem For a Vampire and Shiver of the Vampires. Blu-ray Release Date: May 29th, 2012

We Need to Talk About Kevin BD - Based on the million-selling Orange Prize winning novel by Lionel Shriver and directed by acclaimed film-maker Lynne Ramsay, We Need to Talk About Kevin is an emotional thriller starring Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton, Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller. Eva (Tilda Swinton) puts her ambitions and career aside to give birth to Kevin. The relationship between mother and son is difficult from the very first years. When Kevin is 15, he does something irrational and unforgivable in the eyes of the community. Eva grapples with her own feelings of grief and responsibility. Did she ever love her son? And how much of what Kevin did was her fault? Blu-ray Release Date: May 29th, 2012

Michael BD - A protégé of Michael Haneke, Markus Schleinzer's Michael is a triumph of uneasy cinema. With an unorthodox level of restraint, the director tells the story of a dull office drone who keeps a kidnapped young boy locked in his house. Despite its subversive edge, Michael successfully drains the shock out of a frightening premise and instead delivers a keen observational thriller. From its opening minutes, Michael reveals its alarming plot with a patient, naturalistic atmosphere. Blu-ray Release date: May 28th, 2012

Silver City BD - Between 1951 and 1952, director Byron Haskin (Robinson Crusoe on Mars) and star Edmond O'Brien (The Wild Bunch) collaborated for three westerns. In Silver City, O'Brien plays a mining expert, Larkin Moffatt, who decides to protect mining prospectors, Dutch (Edgar Buchanan) and his daughter Candace (Yvonne De Carlo) from greedy claim-jumper, R.R. Jarboe (Barry Fitzgerald) and his henchman, Bill Taff (Michael Moore). The excellent cast includes Richard Arlen and Laura Elliott. Blu-ray Release date: May 29th, 2012

Denver and Rio Grande BD - Between 1951 and 1952, director Byron Haskin (The War of the Worlds) and star Edmond O'Brien (Silver City) collaborated for three westerns. Edmond O'Brien plays Jim Vesser, a former U.S. Cavalry Officer, now in charge of getting the Denver and Rio Grande tracks across the Rockies first to secure a right-of-way. Standing in his way is the less scrupulous and more ruthless McCabe (Sterling Hayden, The Killing) who's trying to lay his Canyon City and San Juan tracks first. The conflict between the two men turns into guerilla warfare between the two outfits. The excellent cast includes Dean Jagger as General William J. Palmer, Vesser's former commanding officer and Lyle Bettger as Johnny Buff, McCabe's slimy chief gunman. Blu-ray Release date: May 29th, 2012

Female Convict Scorpion BD - An ordinary woman is transformed into a fighting machine in the wake of a shocking crime in this action drama from Japan. Sasori (Miki Mizuno) is a housewife happily married to a policeman (Dylan Kuo) who plays guitar in his spare time. One day, a gang of violent criminals break into Sasori's home and take hold of her husband as Sasori is goaded into murdering his sister. When the police arrive, Sasori is arrested as her husband sits in stunned silence. Convicted of murder, Sasori must prove her mettle against the tough-as-nails inmates at a grim women's prison, but the former housewife reveals she can give as good as she gets in a fight. Sasori runs afoul of the prison staff and the warden (Lam Suet) exiles her into a woodland just outside the prison grounds, where she's isolated with little hope of escape. To Sasori's surprise, she encounters a hermit known as the Corpse Collector (Simon Yam), who gives her a crash course in the martial arts and helps her escape. Sasori fights her way back to civilization and tracks down her husband, who is now playing with a rock band at a night spot, while his wife is determined to get revenge for being sent through hell. Blu-ray Release date: April 10th, 2012

Eclipse Series 33: Up All Night with Robert Downey Sr. - Rarely do landmark works of cinema seem so . . . wrong. Robert Downey Sr. emerged as one of the most irreverent filmmakers of the New York underground of the sixties, taking no prisoners in his rough-and-tumble treatises on politics, race, and consumer culture. In his midnight-movie mainstay Putney Swope, an advertising agency is turned on its head when a militant black man takes over. like Swope, Downey held nothing sacred. Presented here are five of his most raucous and outlandish films, dating from 1964 to 1975, each a unique mix of the hilariously crude and the fiercely experimental. DVD Release Date: April 24th, 2012

The Woman in Black BD - Based on the classic ghost story, The Woman In Black tells the tale of Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a lawyer who is forced to leave his young son and travel to a remote village to attend to the affairs of the recently deceased owner of Eel Marsh House. Working alone in the old mansion, Kipps begins to uncover the town's tragic and tortured secrets and his fears escalate when he discovers that local children have been disappearing under mysterious circumstances. When those closest to him become threatened by the vengeful woman in black, Kipps must find a way to break the cycle of terror. Blu-ray Release date: May 22nd, 2012

The Squad - A military unit on the lookout for guerilla factions while on a rescue mission after having lost contact with the unit stationed at the mountaintop Knife's Point base. Ineffectual Sanchez (Mauricio Navas) has orders for his team to secure the perimeter and wait for back-up, and the sadistic Sarge (Andrés Castañeda) uses physical force to quash down any talk of exploration and rescue; however, Arango (Andres Torres) is desperate to find his missing brother (who is stationed at Knife's Point) and disobeys orders and Parra (Mateo Stevel) is gravely injured by a landmine when he tries to stop him. DVD Release Date: June 18th, 2012

Plot of Fear - Told through ingenious flashbacks, Plot of Fear tells the story of a group of wealthy men and women who get murdered one by one at a decadent weekend party. In his attempt to find a connection between the victims Inspector Lomenzo (Michele Placido) encounters a mysterious fashion model (Cornine Clery) who reveals that at this the drugged-out sex party one of the young girls was `accidentally` killed during a gruesome practical joke. However, it seems that someone at this party is killing the others, but who and why? A brilliant cast lead by Michele Placido, Cornine Clery along with Tom Skerrit and Eli Wallach. DVD Release Date: May 22nd 2012

Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things - Like Let's Scare Jessica to Death, Axe, Devil Times Five and Death Bed, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things shows what can be done with inspiration, determination and a limited budget. An unsettling, minimalist electronic score from Carl Zittrer and some of the most outrageous zombies you'll ever see also await within this cult horror classic. And remember, just because somebody's called Orville, it doesn't mean that they're your "very best friend"! DVD Release Date: May 21st, 2012

Dead of Night - A troupe of method actors and their despotic director head out to Cocount Grove, Florida where, as a prank, they exhume a corpse called Orville and are subsequently horrified when his similarly deceased friends emerge from their graves to play some deadly games of their own. Filmed as America experienced its post-60s comedown, director Bob Clark's first horror feature began a truly terrifying trilogy that continued with the powerful anti-Vietnam war statement Dead Of Night and climaxed with the classic seasonal (and subsequently re-made) scarefest Black Christmas. This weird and unique horror debut - so lysergic in places you can almost smell the Florida grass - is a long way from Clark's later Murder by Decree, which pitted Sherlock Holmes against Jack The Ripper in the fog-shrouded streets of Victorian London. Featuring a cast assembled from various friends, including future Cat People re-make writer Alan Ormsby (who with co-cast member Jeff Gillen went on to direct Deranged, another masterpiece) as well as Jane Daly (one of American TV's most recognisable faces), Clark created one of US independent horror cinema s offbeat classics. DVD Release Date: May 21st, 2012

Meridian - A beautiful young artist must choose her destiny in this hauntingly sensual tale of love, passion and revenge.... Catherine Bomarzini (Sherilyn Fenn - TWIN PEAKS) returns to the family castle in Italy after her father s death and gets caught up in a mysterious love triangle: a man who is at times repulsive, at others enchanting; and a creature of the night whose gentle eyes and touch reveal his infinite love and devotion. With the help of Martha (Hilary Mason) her faithful childhood nanny and the ghost of a slain young girl, Catherine discovers the mediaeval curse that threatens their lives and only she can dispel. DVD Release date: May 28th, 2012

Ruggles of Red Gap BD - The great Charles Laughton found one of his most iconic roles in Leo McCarey’s definitive screen version of Harry Leon Wilson’s best-seller Ruggles of Red Gap – a wryly humorous tapestry of the American West at the turn of the 20th century. When the Earl of Burnstead (Roland Young) transfers the services of Ruggles (Laughton), his immaculate English valet, to Egbert Floud (Charlie Ruggles), a wealthy, brash American, the repercussions prove more dramatic than anyone could have anticipated. Relocating to Red Gap, Washington, Ruggles slowly overcomes his disconcertment as he encounters new alliances, enemies, the route to independence, and, possibly, love. Blu-ray Release date: May 28th, 2012

Demons 2 BD - The Demons are back! Unleashed through the TV and bringing Hell direct to your Living Room. Out of the dark Forbidden Zone, the world s ugliest zombies are causing carnage in an apartment block, eating the residents and spreading their deadly plague. Watch as a teenage birthday girl ruins the party by eating her guests, see bodybuilders torn to shreds and tremble in terror as possessed children run amok. Will anyone survive or will the Demons rise once more and destroy us all? Directed by Lamberto Bava (Demons, Macabre) and produced by Dario Argento (Sleepless, Inferno), this Italian splatter classic will leave you in fear of turning on the Television... Mother Joan of Angels - Based on the documented story of the demonic possession of a group of nuns that led to the burning of a priest at the stake in Loudun, France in 1634 (which also formed the basis for Ken Russell s notorious 1971 film The Devils and provided inspiration to Aldous Huxley for his renowned novel The Devils of Loudun). In acclaimed director Jerzy Kawalerowicz s hands Mother Joan of the Angels is a spare, visually astonishing and profoundly disturbing exploration of faith, repression, fanaticism and sexuality. Aided by an extraordinary performance by Lucyna Winnicka as Mother Joan, Kawalerowicz produces one of cinema s most evocative and intense studies of the tragedy of emotion repressed by dogma. DVD Release Date: May 28th, 2012

Run For Cover BD - James Cagney plays an ex-convict who survives a lynch mob and becomes the town's sheriff in this beautifully shot western directed by the great Nicholas Ray (Johnny Guitar). After serving a six-year prison term for a crime he didn't commit he's once again wrongly accused of robbing a train with a young man (John Derek) he had befriended during his trail. The two men barely survive the trigger-happy posse who would rather shoot first and ask questions later. When word of Cagney's prowess with a gun reaches the local townsfolk, he is offered the job of sheriff. The great cast includes Viveca Lindfors as Swedish farmer's daughter who falls in love with Cagney and Ernest Borgnine as the leader of a dreaded gang of outlaws. This was Cagney's first western since 1939s The Oklahoma Kid. Blu-ray Release date: May 29th, 2012

Too Late Blues BD - Too Late Blues was the second feature film directed by legendary director John Cassavetes (A Woman Under the Influence). After his pioneering independent film Shadows, Cassavetes made his major studio directorial debut with this gritty drama about jazz musicians. Music legend (Bobby Darin) plays a bandleader who scuffles from gig to gig with his band, trying to keep body and soul together without betraying his muse. Sex symbol Stella Stevens (The Nutty Professor) plays a would-be singer with a dark past who meets Darin at a party and joins his band. The two fall deeply in love, but their world comes crumbling down after Darin and his band are involved in a bar fight and Darin is overcome by fear and is unable to fight back. The humiliation causes him to reject her and his band mates. The stellar cast includes Vince Edward (TV's Ben Casey) and Cassavetes regular Seymour Cassel (Minnie and Moskowitz). Blu-ray Release date: May 29th, 2012

Summer Interlude BD - Touching on many of the themes that would define the rest of his legendary career—isolation, performance, the inescapability of the past—Ingmar Bergman’s tenth film was a gentle drift toward true mastery. In one of the director’s great early female roles, Maj-Britt Nilsson beguiles as an accomplished ballet dancer haunted by her tragic youthful affair with a shy, handsome student (Birger Malmsten). Her memories of the sunny, rocky shores of Stockholm’s outer archipelago mingle with scenes from her gloomy present, most of them set in the dark backstage environs of the theater where she works. A film that the director considered a creative turning point, Summer Interlude (Sommarlek) is a reverie about life and death that unites Bergman’s love of theater and cinema.
