The sparkling series featured the irresistible William Powell and Myrna Loy chemistry as husband and wife sleuths who solved murders with the aid of their wire-haired terrier, Asta. Set in the glamorous world of 1930s upper-class Manhattan, The Thin Man and its sequels established the standard for witty comedy, clever dialogue and urbane one upmanship. out of

- William Powell: A True Gentleman

- Myrna Loy: So Nice to Come Home

All DVDs are encoded for Region 1,2,3,4  in the NTSC standard. All have English, Spanish and French subtitles except "The Thin Man" which also includes Portuguese as well. All have original mono English audio and an optional French mono DUB. None contain liner notes. Unlike the other recent Warner Boxset releases you cannot purchase these individually at the time of release - it may remain that they can only be bought in the Boxset in the future.

Firstly we can confirm that the new Keep Case Boxset edition of  "The Thin Man" is a duplicate of the original snapper case release from 2002. No improvements there, which is the only real flaw of the Boxset. It has a damaged image with optional yellow subtitles and no real extras. The rest of the set is filled with the expected featurettes, radio broadcasts and Cartoon supplements. So the champion of the Boxset is The Shadow of the Thin Man and the dog is The Thin Man. Quite a faux-pas not to run the first entry through their restoration system or at least add some more extras. The Bonus disc offers more for Powell and Loy fans (menu is HERE).

World famous sophisticated private detectives Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell & Myrna Loy) provide a very entertaining mixture of Comedy / Mystery / Drama / Crime / Romance all rolled into one DVD Boxset with two of the more engaging and delightful characters of cinema history. We recommend!

Nick and Nora Charles cordially invite you to bring your own alibi to The Thin Man, the jaunty whodunit that made William Powell and Myrna Loy the champagne elite of sleuthing. Bantering in the boudoir, enjoying walks with beloved dog Asta or matching each other highball for highball and clue for clue, they combined screwball romance with mystery. The resulting triumph nabbed four Academy Award nominations* (including Best Picture) and spawned five sequels. Credit W.S. "Woody" Van Dyke for recognizing that Powell and Loy were ideal together and for getting the studio's okay by promising to shoot this splendid adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel in three weeks. He took 12 days. They didn't call him "One-Take Woody" for nothing.

The transfer is not really up to Warner's recent output. It has not been improved since its initial 2002 digital release and is dark and hazy with a fair amount of damages and dirt showing up. The yellow subtitles are a dead giveaway that this was not a more recent Warner reconstruction. The film is 70 years old so the audio has some crackling in it. None of this is atrocious and will stop true 'Nick and Nora' fans from enjoying the film in this DVD package but it is certainly not reaching their recent commitment level. Extras are very weak with only the text screen bios and trailers for all 6 Thin Man films! out of

The most elegant title for a sequel in film history belongs, happily, to one of the most elegant sequels (1934). Two years after The Thin Man, Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell and Myrna Loy) have moved to San Francisco, Asta in tow. The mystery elements amount to much less than Powell and Loy's effervescent interplay as the movies' most happily married couple.

Comments:

Picture quality has definitely improved from the previous (and older) release. Sharper with super grey levels and some good shadow detail. Some minor damage can be seen. Subtitles are back to the expected off-white font with a black border. Extras are up to snuff with a short featurette in "How to be a Detective", a cartoon and a LUX radio broadcast. Warner is back on track with this release. out of

This was the third movie in the Thin Man series starring the supremely elegant Powell as the eponymous amateur sleuth, Nick Charles. His character, aided by socialite wife Nora (Loy) is never out of sight of a cocktail shaker and makes light work of Hammett's creation. Usually there's a perky dog around, but here it's a kid. The story has them visiting the country home of an arms manufacturer who fears for his life. Lots of familiar faces are brought in to liven things up. But it all rather diluted, as though the ice has melted in the dry martini !

Image quality is another small notch above the older film DVD release.  Just that much sharper with excellent contrast. Extras include another featurette and a delightful cartoon. This is the quality from Warner that we have recently become accustomed to. Good job !  out of

A jockey who threw a race is murdered in the locker room. "My, they're strict at this track" Nora Charles exclaims. With that, she (Myrna Loy) and hubby Nick (William Powell) are off to the races on another case of murder, mirth and perfect martini's. Highlights of this fourth Thin Man include a visit to the arena for the evenings 'wrasslin' and dinner at Mario's Grotto where, no matter what anyone wants, the waiter insists upon the Sea Bass. Red Herrings may abound but we still recommend the Sea Bass!.

Comments:

Its just keeps getting better - and by that I mean 'sharper'. This is a beautiful edition with deep black levels and fabulous shadow detail again. I can see a bit of good film grain in the close-ups which is another good sign as far as I am concerned. The addition of Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart is very good if somewhat unrelated. I love the cartoon additions. Another Warner winner!  out of

NOTE: The Tell Tale Heart was also the first picture directed by Jules Dassin! Check out the economic lighting he used in favor of dramatic shadows, and you'll see why this hidden little film is a must-see for any film noir fan. (Thanks Jeff!)

directed by Richard Thorpe
USA 1945

The fifth Dashiell Hammett husband-and-wife, Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell and Myrna Loy), urban private detective team film in the successful "Thin Man" series is another good one--retaining their fast-paced witty dialogue, great chemistry together and clever plot twists. Crisply directed by Richard Thorpe from a story by Robert Riskin & Harry Kurnitz, it has the couple going by train on their holiday to the peaceful suburban community of Sycamore Springs to visit birthday boy Nick's parents. After enduring the jibes of his disappointed dad that he only turned out to be a policeman and did not follow in his footsteps as a doctor, Nick gets a chance to prove to dad that he has an important job and does it well when the local artist and factory worker Peter Berton gets gunned down on his doorsteps.

The Nick and Nora Charles crime formula story works even in the sticks; Powell and Loy and their pet dog Asta leave their sophisticated home turf for a refreshing change of pace in hayseed country. But as long as there are murders, the fun loving couple are in their element and have the wisecracks cranked up in high gear to prove they can also deal with a bucolic setting. Aided by a colorful supporting cast that includes Gloria DeHaven, Donald Meek, Lloyd Corrigan, Leon Ames, and Ann Revere, as the town loony who is called "Crazy Mary," the film floats merrily by like a country breeze on a fine summer day.

Comments:

Perhaps not quite as sharp as The Shadow of the Thin Man - it is not far off, and I know we are being picky here. It really does look marvelous - a little more pale than, but still remarkable good for the collection. Another featurette and a Tex Avery cartoon, add in the theatrical trailer and we have another strong DVD from Warner. I found the menus in this particularly striking. This is another good reason to pick-up the Boxset.  out of

Just as my favorite Noir honey, Gloria Grahame, gets involved the series ends. Nick and Nora investigate a jazz-club killing as the last of the 6 film series. Still held together with its magnetic stars we now see that Nick Jr., born in Another Thin Man (1939), has blossomed into Dean Stockwell. Perhaps a fitting time to call it quits.
