João César Monteiro : The Complete Collection - 11 DVD Boxset
directed by João César Monteiro
Portugal / France
Condemned to be ambulant myth ever since his blooming years (having been christened Fernando Lopes as "the Rimbaud of Portuguese cinema"), and later taking to it through heteronymic effect, João César Monteiro presses upon the indigenous cinematography a fingerprint only to be blotted out by those encephalons that bow down to the Beautiful and Sublime - as they where expectorated by the Dostoyevsky of "Notes from the Underground". On such luminaries a meteor, an elf (a sickly elf), comes crashing down from other stratospheres...

Within many DVD box sets being available worldwide one can only count very few that might be suggested as "essential" to own, or even be given as an ultimate gift to someone who cherishes "true cinema". Among them one could list MK2 complete works of Truffaut, TVP/ Warner Bros. Poland and it's stunning edition of Kieslowski's "Dekalog", Sino-Movie's release of Hou Hsiao-Hsien early works from 1983-1986, perhaps Asmik's Teshigahara's set, as well many superb Criterion's sets of Dreyer, Cassavetes, Bergman, Cocteau etc. I would think that I've omitted many others that might be listed with admiration. None are as superb in my humble opinion as is Madragoa/Gemini "The Complete João César Monteiro" It's a massive release, truly overlooked in past few years, containing every film that the champion of Portuguese cinema has left us to enjoy for many years to come. Without a doubt it's a great way to introduce oneself to his oeuvre, from early very poetic short pieces to his late masterpieces. Save for it if you can, get it while it's available and make your own Monteiro's retrospective at home. Lastly thanks to Madragoa/Gemini for this gem. |
