Sulley, the main monster of "Monsters, Inc.," looks a little like a bear, except he's purple and aquamarine. His horns and generous build are reminiscent of Shrek. Then again, the little girl who befriends him thinks he's a cat.

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were ripped directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Disney (US) - Region FREE Blu-ray - November 09': I can't discern any differences in the video or English audio transfer from the Japanese Blu-ray. Although the US edition reports a higher file size - this is most probably due to the seamless addition of both French and Spanish for text signs, extras and the DUBs etc. So the difference is solely in the package and the extras, IF you don't require the foreign language option (the presentation starts with your choice of 'English', 'French' or 'Spanish'). To 'cut to the chase' - the 4-disc US set has the important ones like the commentary, roundtable discussion and shorts. It adds more production featurettes, the massive art gallery, the Digital Copy disc and a standard DVD of the film. the US disc is also BD-LIVE capable.
Both Blu-rays
are Region FREE as
verified by the
Momitsu region FREE Blu-ray player.
The Japanese 1080P disc is far more expensive and only
had the appeal of getting the
Blu-ray
6 months earlier for those who didn't require the Japanese DUB. The
image quality remains totally flawless and is highly recommended as a
reference disc for your system.
Gary Tooze
ADDITION: Disney (Japan) - Region FREE Blu-ray
- May 09': This is the Japanese package that contains 2 Blu-ray
discs (a dual-layered first with the feature and a single-layered second
with more that 22 Gig of HD supplements that run for over an hour.) Both
are Region FREE as
verified by the
Momitsu region FREE Blu-ray player.
The DVDs were reference quality for SD and the Blu-ray
is superior in all the usual areas. Colors are brighter, detail stronger
and there is more information in the frame's side edges. Everything has
tightened up and the quality may be one of the best Blu-rays
I own (and I own almost 1000). It consistently looks 3-dimensional with
brilliant colors. It is incredibly impressive with stunning visuals
every few minutes. Clicking on the Blu-ray
captures to reveal the 1080 resolution images should give you a better
idea of how 'reference' the hi-def transfer is.
The DTS-HD Master audio at over 4000 Kpbs is, likewise, pristine. Every
nuance of sound - effect, theme music or dialogue - is crisp with
dynamically resonating precision. This has absolutely no faults that I
was able to determine with the A/V. The voice of 'Roz' (Bob Peterson)
sounds slightly different to me but I may be imagining things. I'll
continue to run tests and compare when I have the time. There are both
English and Japanese optional subtitles and a Japanese DUB.
After about 5 adverts, director
Peter Docter introduces the Japanese
Blu-ray
(and probably the eventual US one) and tells us that
the
supplements include all the extras on the
previous DVD releases, plus the following Blu-ray
exclusive extras:
As the menus are in Japanese I haven't yet ventured into discovering all
the 2-disc package has to offer - extras-wise. But, honestly, I was more
interested in the transfer which is absolutely magnificent. I can't
extol it any more - it will get a lot of play in my household, for my
two boys, friends... and even myself to 'Wow' at the quality. I'll
report more as I come across it. I imagine the eventual US release
(scheduled for November 09') will be the same with some minor
variations. There is a UK release coming at the end of July, 2009
HERE.
Gary Tooze ON THE DVDs: Video quality on the two DVDs is almost the same. PAL is just slightly cropped on left side (see the orange cow on wallpaper - 2ndcap). Although there are stronger contrasting colors on NTSC version, PAL's one offers a sharper picture (see details on little girl's hairs - last cap). The DTS track on region 2 is convincing but I
still prefer Original Version as the French dubs
aren't good as the English track. The Canadian Region 1 has a
French dub. Subtitles are superior on the
PAL edition. |
