2021 (Recommended titles have "**")
Adoration [Blu-ray] (Fabrice
du Welz, 2019) Altered Innocence
US:
https://amzn.to/3fyShH4
COMMENTS: Young lovers are on the run in the final film of Fabrice du Welz's
Ardennes trilogy (Calvaire, Alleluia). An official selection of Fantastic Fest,
the film follows shy 12-year old Paul who lives near a psychiatric institute.
After an encounter with a patient there, the troubled yet beautiful Gloria, he
becomes infatuated and vows to protect her. Insisting the doctors are holding
her hostage for an inheritance, the two escape and wreak havoc across the French
countryside. A potent combination of violent thriller and romantic sexual
awakening, du Welz masterfully captures the teenage intensity of 'amour fou'
pairing perfectly with Manuel Dacosse's sumptuous 16mm photography.

CAN: https://amzn.to/3xWzT1b
COMMENTS: Ruby Carter (the flawless Mae West, She Done Him Wrong), the night
club sensation of St. Louis, relocates to New Orleans and becomes the prize
attraction of “The Sensation Club.” West’s risqué brand of humor and naughty
musical numbers enliven a plot that involves jewel thieves, a fixed boxing match
and murder. Co-written by West, directed by the great Leo McCarey (Duck Soup,
The Awful Truth, Going My Way) and featuring Duke Ellington and His Orchestra
who provide musical accompaniment for several of West’s songs.

CAN: https://amzn.to/3jjZ5Lk
COMMENTS: Jessica Lange (Tootsie), Joan Allen (Nixon) and Kathy Bates (Misery)
hit the road in Bonneville, a story about three friends who “come of age” for a
second time on a trip across the great American West. Faced with the decision of
a lifetime, Arvilla Holden (Lange) loads up her 1966 Bonneville convertible and,
with her friends (Allen, Bates) in tow, sets out from Pocatello, Idaho en route
to Santa Barbara. As they detour to spots like Bryce Canyon and Las Vegas, it
doesn’t take long for the women to realize Arvilla has something unexpected in
store. But what none of them realize is that what began as a simple trip will
end up becoming a chance to rediscover themselves, their friendship, the
importance of promises – and of letting go. Also starring Tom Skerritt and
Christine Baranski, Bonneville unites three of the most acclaimed actresses of
our time in a story that celebrates fun, adventure and living life to the
fullest.

COMMENTS: Gioia (Serena Grandi, star of Tinto Brass’ Miranda) is a buxom
centerfold working for Pussycat magazine. In such a profession, having an
admirer or two is expected, but Gioia’s new admirer is a vicious killer! He
murders her fellow magazine models one at a time, using a variety of twisted
implements of death. Gioia is the lucky recipient of a collection of photos,
each with murdered bodies arranged around posters of her. Renowned Italian star
Grandi, known as the Dolly Parton of Italy, leads the cast in this Giallo
classic, which features George Eastman (Hands of Steel, Blastfighter, After the
Fall of New York, Ironmaster) David Brandon (Stage Fright, Caligula the Untold
Story, She), Daria Nicolodi (Deep Red, Tenebre, Inferno, Opera) and screen
legend Capucine (The Pink Panther, Red Sun). Delirium was wonderfully directed
by Lamberto Bava (Monster Shark, Blastfighter, Ironmaster) – now see this
colorful Giallo in HD!

OUR REVIEW:
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film9/blu-ray_review_139/eye_of_the_cat_blu-ray.htm
COMMENTS: I really enjoyed my viewing of the quirky Eye of the Cat. David Lowell
Rich's film was badly panned by many critics upon its initial release. I found
it an inventive, sexy horror that is realized in very clever ways. I can
envision it having a niche following with its unbalanced premise and obtuse
dialogue that actually adds to the film's mystery qualities. Gayle Hunnicutt
underplays the cold, scheming, sexually desirable girlfriend, Eleanor Parker as
the classy but desperately lonely aunty, and Sarrazin as the ailurophobic (fear
of cats), carefree, playboy whose looks and hollow charm have carried him
through most of his drifting existence. It's a darn interesting mix with the
murder plot being almost blasé as compared to the interpersonal conflicts that
arise. Then there's the ever-present specter of felines slinking around
throughout with creepy possibilities. Now I feel like watching it again. The
Indicator Blu-ray continues announcing that they are at the top of their game
with disc production, transfer and supplements - the best BD company we have.
Eye of the Cat is an odd film but the commentary and extras helped me appreciate
it significantly more. Absolutely recommended!

Every Day's a Holiday
[Blu-ray] (A. Edward Sutherland, 1937) Kino
US:
https://amzn.to/3s7Nmjq
CAN: https://amzn.to/3h0B1eU
COMMENTS: The impeccable Mae West (She Done Him Wrong) is Peaches O’Day, a con
artist who befriends Captain Jim McCarey (Edmund Lowe, Chandu the Magician), a
cop who must turn her in unless she leaves town. The clever Peaches returns
transformed as sultry brunette and Parisian sensation Mademoiselle Fifi. After
catching the show, crooked mayoral candidate John Quade (Lloyd Nolan, The House
on 92nd Street) tries to close it down when Peaches demurely declines his
romantic overtures. Captain McCarey jumps in the race for mayor against Quade,
and the loyal Peaches fervently campaigns for him. With the help of jazz great
Louis Armstrong (A Man Called Adam) on trumpet, an enthusiastic Mae rallies the
crowd to “Laugh, Sing and Vote!” in a delightful final scene. Written by West
and directed by A. Edward Sutherland (It’s the Old Army Game).

Flight of the Intruder
[Blu-ray] (John Milius, 1991) Paramount
US:
https://amzn.to/2Qb5v31
CAN: https://amzn.to/3diUbdC
COMMENTS: From the producer of The Hunt For Red October and the director of Red
Dawn comes this explosive wartime adventure roaring with spectacular aerial
action. Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon) plays commander Frank Camparelli, the
battle-hardened squadron leader of an aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War.
Brad Johnson (Always) is pilot Jake Grafton, a disillusioned young renegade
looking for payback. Willem Dafoe (Platoon) is Cole, the cynical, hell-bent
bombardier Grafton recruits to fly an unauthorized mission behind enemy lines.
The target: a missile depot in Hanoi. The Plane: the A-6 Intruder, a low
altitude bomber with no defensive weapons. The risk: court martial at the hands
of Commander Camparelli...if they live to return.

US:

CAN: https://amzn.to/2UxJ0XN
COMMENTS: There's the right way, the wrong way and the Army way. But there's no
way military investigator Paul Brenner (John Travolta) is going to participate
in a cover-up when Fort MacCallum officials try to hide the motive behind the
murder of a beautiful female officer. Travolta's magnetic performance sparks
this riveting thriller from the director of Con Air and the producer of The Hunt
for Red October. Madeleine Stowe plays Brenner's co-investigator and former
flame. And James Cromwell, Timothy Hutton, Clarence Williams III and James Woods
are among the suspects in this "steamy game of cat and mouse that will keep you
guessing until the surprising explosive ending.

COMMENTS: Kino Lorber's Blu-ray of Go West Young Man is a worthy addition to any
Mae West fan's collection. The 1080p transfer easily bests the old SD DVD

Goin' to Town [Blu-ray]
(Alexander Hall, 1935) Kino
US:
https://amzn.to/2OAhMgA
CAN: https://amzn.to/3diR4T4
COMMENTS: Screen legend Mae West (I’m No Angel) shines as a saloon girl turned
devilish debutante in her first western comedy, Goin’ to Town. Bride-to-be Cleo
Borden (West) suddenly becomes the benefactor of her fiancé’s ranch and oil
business after a fatal shootout. Now a rich woman, she sets out to oversee the
ranch and is met with disdain by British oil expert Edward Carrington (Paul
Cavanagh, A Bill of Divorcement). Sensing a challenge, Cleo takes a crash course
in culture to get his attention. Her first test comes when she follows Edward to
Buenos Aires where she successfully mingles with society’s elite in the
glamorous world of horseracing. The toast of all men (except the one she’s
after), Cleo agrees to marry affluent Fletcher Colton (Monroe Owsley,
Indiscreet) but soon learns of his dangerously obsessive gambling habits.
Co-written by West and directed by Alexander Hall (Here Comes Mr. Jordan).

COMMENTS: Hammer Volume Six: Night Shadows revives four consummate Hammer
classics from the early sixties, exemplifying some of Hammer Films' best work in
the horror and thriller genres. Edgar Allan Poe looms large in The Shadow of the
Cat, a macabre ‘old dark house’ tale of feline revenge, starring André Morell
(Cash on Demand) and Barbara Shelley (The Camp on Blood Island); Peter Cushing
(The Gorgon, Corruption) and Oliver Reed (The Scarlet Blade) star in Captain
Clegg, which sees Hammer fuse horror and adventure in an eighteenth-century-set
tale of smugglers and marsh phantoms; Herbert Lom (Mysterious Island) stars as
The Phantom of the Opera in Hammer’s acclaimed production of Gaston Leroux’s
Gothic classic, whilst Freddie Francis (Torture Garden) directs Nightmare, a
spooky psychological thriller in the Les Diaboliques vein, which benefits from
full-blooded central performances by Moira Redmond (Jigsaw) and Jennie Linden (A
Severed Head). This collection contains a wealth of new and archival extra
features, including documentaries and appreciations, interviews with actors and
crew members, audio commentaries, and extensive booklets.

COMMENTS: Wesley Ruggles' I'm No Angel has some of Mae West most iconic,
self-written, lines:
"Well... When I'm good, I'm very good.
But, when I'm bad... I'm better."
"Beulah, peel me a grape."
"Somewhere there's a guy with a million
waitin' for a dame like me."
"Come up and see me sometime!".
Great to see a young Cary Grant and
their interaction onscreen. It will be wonderful to fully revisit Mae West's
films in 1080P with new commentaries. You can watch this vintage gems at any
time taking a deep dive intro the Pre-Code world of bold sexual innuendo. The
Kino Blu-ray is a definite keeper and we can strongly recommend!

**In Harm's Way**
[Blu-ray] (Otto Preminger, 1965) Paramount
US:
https://amzn.to/3doIvWX
CAN: https://amzn.to/3jk15Dk
COMMENTS: Producer-Director Otto Preminger’s epic treatment of the bombing of
Pearl Harbor details the devastating attack on the Hawaiian naval base as well
as the explosive, behind-the-scenes stories. An awesome cast – including John
Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Patricia Neal, Henry Fonda, Carroll O’Connor, Burgess
Meredith, Paula Prentiss, Dana Andrews and a host of other notables – is
interwoven into this account of the attack itself, as well as into the triumphs
and tragedies of disobeyed orders, the American counter-offensive, father-son
reunions, battles at sea, and layers of romantic entanglements. It’s a story
that’s been told and re-told, but perhaps never so completely.

COMMENTS: The glamorous Mae West (My Little Chickadee) stars as a “kept” woman
who flees to Alaska and the Gold Rush of the 1890s in Klondike Annie. After the
beautiful Rose Carlton (West) escapes from the clutches of the wealthy and
possessive Chan Lo (Harold Huber, The Thin Man), she finds herself on a ship

The Informer), instantly falls for Rose but she is distracted by her new cabin

philosophies, the unlikely pair develop a meaningful friendship before Sister
Annie becomes sick and passes on. In desperation, as her past starts to catch up
with her, Rose changes her identity with her deceased friend and is inspired to

COMMENTS: The Leather Boys is a fascinating entry into the 'kitchen sink' films
that were gaining popularity in Britain at the time. The film deals with some
rather heavy subject matter (both explicit and implied) while sporting some
gorgeous black & white cinematography. AGFA (American Genre Film Archive) and
Shout! Factory's joint Blu-ray release is something to behold, not only is this
release from the original 35mm camera negative, but the handful of extras
provide a great context to the film and the early 60's zeitgeist. AGFA and
Shout! Factory have a winner on their hands with this release. Highly
recommended.

COMMENTS: Remastered, uncut and beautifully restored, now you can see The Little
Rascals like never before! With restorations so glorious, it will be like
watching these iconic shorts for the first time! In Hollywood, the Hal Roach
Studio was unofficially known as the "Lot of Fun", employing such mirthmakers as
Laurel & Hardy and Charley Chase. But many of the company's most popular comedy
shorts starred an aggregation collectively known as "Our Gang", a series whose
premise was captivatingly simple: showcase a motley group of scruffy but lovable
kids whose antics were easily identifiable to moviegoing audiences. The series,
later re-titled "The Little Rascals" for TV syndication, got its start in 1922
during the silent era, and transitioned to sound by the end of the decade. Early
"talkies" in the franchise like Teacher's Pet (1930), School's Out (1930) and
Love Business (1931) would prove to be some of their finest -- all of which are
included in this volume and continue to entertain subsequent generations of
classic movie devotees.

COMMENTS: A brilliant scientist, a pioneering woman in a field closed to her
gender, a woman who shares a passion for discovery with her husband--a passion
that will cause the death of the love of her life--Academy Award winner Greer
Garson stars as Madame Curie. Behind the discovery of radioactivity lies the
story of Marie (Garson--Mrs. Miniver, Sunrise at Campobello) and Pierre Curie
(Walter Pidgeon--Mrs. Miniver, Executive Suite)--a moving, human story of two
people who love each other as much as their great work. Their meeting as
scientist and student, their hesitant courtship and ultimate marriage joins the
two in both heart and mind as they work together on what seems a hopeless task.
Success comes at last, but there is little time to savor their triumph--for
although their work has opened a new field of science to the world, it has cost
Pierre his life.

COMMENTS: Night Terror does have similarities to Spielberg's Duel with Dennis
Weaver. I found that the original broadcast edit had some gaps with
less-explained character and plot details but they don't make the, relatively,
simple, thriller story worse, just possibly feeling 'rushed' and you may just
have to more embrace a suspension of disbelief. There is a ham-fisted expression
of Carol (Harper) as a ditzy, protected, housewife but forced to show strength
because of the adversity of her terrifying situation. It's a little silly but
Night Terror does have nostalgia value. The Scorpion Releasing Blu-ray gives
supportive a/v (looked and sounded fine n my system) and the enthusiastic,
edifying commentary has value. It was interesting to step back into 70's TV for
this female-based Duel-like effort. I was entertained.

of the Lord has more to do with condemning souls than saving them, especially
when his own interests are involved. Now his sights are set on $10,000and two
little children are the only ones who know where it is. Chill...dren! the
preacher croons to the terrified boy and girl hiding in the cold, dark
cellar...innocent young lambs who refuse to be led astray. A finely acted,
imaginatively directed chiller with brooding power ( Variety ), The Night of the
Hunter stars Mitchum in the most daring and critically acclaimed performance of
his career. Spellbinding, ominous, and hauntingly suspenseful, this
extraordinary film noir classic remains one of the most frightening movies ever
made (Pauline Kael)

COMMENTS: Fans should be sure to pick up Criterion's fantastic 2K digital

"Pariah". Adepero Oduye's restrained performance is very moving, and Kim Wayans
and Charles Parnell's poor parenting roles are more three-dimensional than one
might expect. This Criterion Blu-ray is absolutely recommended. - Colin Zavitz

COMMENTS: David Bowie is one of the most seminal legends in music history; but
who was the man behind the many faces? In 1971, a 24-year-old fledgling David
Bowie (Johnny Flynn) is sent to America to promote his newest record, The Man
Who Sold the World. Leaving behind his pregnant wife Angie (Jena Malone), Bowie
and his band embark on a makeshift coast-to-coast promotional tour with
struggling Mercury Records publicist Rob Oberman (Marc Maron). Stateside, Bowie
is quickly met with an audience that's not yet ready for him. During the
tumultuous journey, Bowie slowly begins to realize a need to reinvent himself in
order to truly become himself; it's with that realization that his iconic,
celestial alter-ego Ziggy Stardust is born. Anchored by two stellar performances
from Flynn and Maron, Stardust offers an intimate glimpse into the moments that
inspired the creation of Bowie's first and most memorable alter-ego,
illuminating the turning point that cemented his legacy as one of the world's
greatest cultural icons.

COMMENTS: Michael Gordon's The Web is at the higher end of the Noir cycle of
films. Because it has been out of the conversation for so long it's something to
celebrate to have this forgotten and underrated gem surface on Kino Blu-ray.
Ella Raines, Edmond O'Brien, William Bendix, Vincent Price... in a tight
frame-plotted thriller with wonderful dark cinema characterizations from the
bold ambitious everyman, the independent wily female, the studious cop and the
nefarious criminal mastermind. Our highest recommendation!

COMMENTS: Sergio Pastore's The Crimes of the Black Cat is a definite Giallo made
in the heart of the genre's production glut of the 70s. I was very entertained
by this thriller that was filled with mystery around the eventually exposed
murderer. The blind pianist as a 'detective' and English accent butler is an
appealing, infrequently utilized, trope. There is some skin and gore The shower
scene is quite graphic.) I'm very encouraged by Cauldron Films and hope they
continue to expose and transfer these less-discussed genre films onto Blu-ray.
The image quality is modest but consistent and it allowed me to see an
intriguing Giallo in 1080P with the two commentaries (the new Howarth and
Thompson one is highly recommended and all of the fine work of 'Fragments of
Fear - A Giallo Podcast'), plus the two featurettes on the director. This is
perfect for fans who embrace this desirable, stylish, and often addictive horror
genre.

It's a relatively passive film but the aura has a haunting quality and Lom does
a marvellous job in the role after predecessors Lon Chaney and Claude Rains.
Hammer completists will want Hammer Volume Six: Night Shadows as the definitive

outstanding as Terence Fisher's The Phantom of the Opera is setting the bar at
its highest level for Blu-ray production. Indicator are at the top of their
game. This boxset is easily in the 'must-own' category.

COMMENTS: Bill Duke's intense Deep Cover treats the viewer in respectful,
non-pandering terms with realistic but subtly expressed themes of inter-city
drug use, its effect on children, a conscious look at the drug trade explosion,
greed, immoral criminals etc. Larry Fishburne, Clarence Williams III and Charles
Martin Smith were excellent, - Jeff Goldblum - maybe not his best role - but
director Duke realizes the film exceptionally well while maintaining a very
Neo-Noir-ish thriller hold on the viewer. It's exciting and riveting with
excellent characters driving the suspense of unforeseen interpersonal decisions
and moral conflicts. The 4K-restored Criterion Blu-ray provides a dynamic 1080P
presentation and is stacked with over 2-hours of valuable supplements. This film

Eddie Mueller commentary on Alias Nick Beal and his comments on director John
Farrow. Glenn Ford? - at his most charismatic, suave and tough. Diana Lynn's
voice really does remind me of Gloria Grahame. It has many characteristics of
Noir; lighting, misanthropic, financially desperate, protagonist, with a
historical adventure-treasure-hunt focus in the vein of The Maltese Falcon.
Seedy characters, suspicious femme fatales, greed... and murder. I really
enjoyed this Imprint Blu-ray viewing, also appreciating the excellent Barry
Forshaw supplement. Vintage film and dark cinema advocates invited to indulge.
