(aka "I Love You, I Don't")
Directed by Serge Gainsbourg
France 1976
Cult icon Serge Gainsbourg wrote, directed, and scored Je t’aime moi non plus, a
tale of doomed love between a lonely truck stop waitress (Jane Birkin,
Blow-Up)
and a gay, hunky garbage truck driver (Joe Dallesandro,
Flesh), whose boyfriend
(Hugues Quester) becomes increasingly jealous of the two. ***
Say the words Je T’aime Moi Non Plus to people of a certain age and
you’re like to be greeted with a smirk or a swift When Harry Met Sally-style
Meg Ryan impression as memories of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s song, come
flooding back. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. ADDITION: Kino Blu-ray (February 2020): Kino have transferred Serge Gainsbourg's Je t’aime moi non plus to Blu-ray. It is from a "4K Restoration" and looks magnificent. It may have some minor teal-leaning but overall the image is very strong with beautiful film textures and consistent, impressive detail. This 1080P in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio looks excellent in-motion. On their Blu-ray, Kino use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original French language. There are minimal effects (the garbage truck, cooking a burger and some later violence) with a fitting score credited to, with pieces written by, Serge Gainsbourg including Ballade De Johnny-Jane, Le Camion Jaune, Banjo Au Bord Du Styx, Rock'N'Roll Autour De Johnny, Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus all performed by Jean-Pierre Sabar Et Son Orchestre. Kino offer optional English subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray. The Kino Blu-ray includes an excellent audio commentary by Samm Deighan - perhaps my favorite from her so far. She delves into so many details like the unspoken transgender character expression and how Serge Gainsbourg wrote the song in 1967 for actress Brigitte Bardot and that she was 'fingered' to produce the moaning heard on the recording (and that it was withdrawn and re-recorded with Birkin in 1969). The commentary is so revealing as I was unaware of so much regarding Je t'aime moi non plus. She discusses Serge Gainsbourg as a poet, artist and how he tapped into something very unique with his work. I enjoyed Samm's comments very much - they add a lot of value here. There is also a new 14-minute interview with star Joe Dallesandro who recalls the making Je t'aime moi non plus. There is also a 24-minute Q&A with Jane Birkin and Joe Dallesandro (courtesy of Film at Lincoln Center) and a trailer. Je t’aime moi non plus is maybe one of the 'coolest' films I have ever seen. It produces reactions of love and hate - as do many art expressions. I loved it. Serge Gainsbourg really does tap into something here. We, the audience, has a range of emotions surrounding Birkin's innocent nymph-like 'Johnny' from protection to raw lust. There is explicit nudity for any who might be offended - both female and male. It's such a unique film experience and I am so glad I was able to see on Blu-ray... and have Samm Deighan's commentary to hold my hand through my subsequent viewing. We give this a VERY strong recommendation! Pheww... Watch this! |
