Directed by Paul Greengrass
UK 1989

The extraordinary feature film debut from Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, United 93) is a disturbing and powerful true story of a British soldier (David Thewlis - Naked) injured and lost during the 1980s Falklands conflict. Presumed dead, he's given full military honours; but on returning he's treated with distrust and shame, and accused of desertion.

Also featuring excellent performances from Rita Tushingham (A Taste of Honey, Doctor Zhivago) and Tom Bell (The L-Shaped Room, The Krays), Resurrected is an intense and provocative drama, a powerful cry against institutional violence and political indifference.

***

The career-launching movie from director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum) and actor David Thewlis (Naked), Resurrected (1989) is a documentary-style film based on the true story of a Falklands soldier who turns up alive after being presumed dead and accorded a military funeral with full honors. With a tough screenplay by Martin Allen, the film makes no bones about the innocent soldier’s subsequent brutalization by his military comrades and fellow townspeople. A Berlin International Film Festival award-winner.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Indicator Blu-ray (January 2020): Indicator are releasing Paul Greengrass' 1989 film Resurrected to Blu-ray. It was previously released in 1080P by Twilight Time back in 2014. This looks very impressive in 1080P - especially some of the countryside outside of Manchester (rich greens). I did feel it would be a bit waxy and less-naturally soft, but we see this sometimes with late 80's stock and I didn't see definitive signs of digitization. Overall, it looked surprisingly strong on my system showing realistic colors, crisp detail, fine grain, but little depth.

On their Blu-ray, Indicator use a linear PCM 2.0 channel track (24-bit) in the original English language. It also sounds adept with a few battle-related effects and an underplayed score by John E. Keane, sounding reasonably supportive when utilized. Indicator offer optional English (SDH) subtitles on their Region FREE Blu-ray.

Indicator add a 2011 interview in which the director Paul Greengrass on 'Resurrected' discussing the origins and creation of the film for almost 19-minutes. Also from 2011, is an interview with David Thewlis on 'Resurrected' running over 1/4 hour where the actor examines the process of playing the lead role of Kevin Deakin. Filming the Unthinkable is a new 5-minute interview with iconic British actor Rita Tushingham about the making of Resurrected and the true story - she is always frank. As the film runs you may choose to listen to The IWM Oral History with Philip Williams from1992. It runs 66-minutes into the film and is described as an archival audio recording, made by the Imperial War Museum, featuring the real-life inspiration for Resurrected recalling his experiences in the Falklands War. Lastly are an original theatrical trailer and image gallery of publicity and promotional material. The package has a liner notes, limited edition exclusive 36-page booklet with a new essay by Julian Petley, Paul Greengrass and screenwriter Martin Allen on Resurrected, extracts from an archival interview with Philip Williams, an overview of critical responses, and film credits.

Resurrected is an interesting film in that there is a mystery of a true-life story but it can be unsatisfying with melancholy overtones. I thought Greengrass' debut showed promise being a low budget film - and there was some good acting. I didn't know the story and also found it educational, but overall couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing... Indicator provide another stellar Blu-ray product, with strong a/v and revealing supplements. Their work is always recommended to any interested in the, respective, films that bring to HD.
