Critics are hailing Willem Dafoe's performance (earning a 2018 Oscar® nomination for Best Supporting Actor) in this warm and winning story about an unforgettable summer seen through the eyes of a 6-year-old girl.

On a stretch of highway just outside the most magical place on earth, six-year-old Moonee and her ragtag band of playmates spend an unforgettable summer at The Magic Castle, a budget motel managed by Bobby (in a career-best performance by Willem Dafoe). Bobby's stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion as he watches over the kids' adventures, protecting them from some of the harsher realities of life.

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

The Florida Project gets a 1080P transfer to Blu-ray from Universal Pictures. It looks quite impressive with the many brightly colored buildings and clothing appearing clean and crisp. The aspect ratio is advertised as 2.40:1 but it clocks it closer to 2.38:1 not that this matters as the ratio of the picture gives the film a beautiful wide scope. This is on a dual-layered disc with a high bitrate (30.55). It is a pristinely clean presentation and looks wonderful in-motion. The visuals are frequently bright - many outdoors sequences. Even the drab-sounding locations showcase vibrant colors and every shot is beautifully framed.

Audio comes in a healthy DTS-HD Master 5.1 surround track (24-bit) that easily handles the film's requirements. There is some minor aggression and brief separations in a few select scenes. The score is by Lorne Balfe (Churchill, Ghost in the Shell, The LEGO Batman Movie) plus others will tap their toes to samplings of Celebration by by Kool & The Gang and Balfe's orchestral version plus pop music and pieces by Doug Walker and The Zinghoppers. It all sounds excellent and helps establish contrast to the underlying mood of despair. There are optional subtitles (see sample) on the Region 'A'-locked Blu-ray.

Universal Pictures include a 22-minute making-of featurette called "Under the Rainbow: Making the Florida Project" which shows various levels of production, from location scouting to production meetings and filming. It is a very revealing look at how this film was put together. The doc isn't afraid to show some of the hardships that the crew had to endure while filming. Also included are various interviews with the cast, director, and co-writer. These range from 2 to 15 minutes and contain some interesting facts about the filming, and working with the director. There is also a 'Bloopers and Outtakes' reel that lasts just under 3 minutes. It is mildly amusing and I imagine that this could have been much longer, given the chaos of working with children.

Sean Baker continues to impress, following up his wonderful  Starlet and Tangerine with yet another beautiful film about individuals living on the outskirts of society. The visuals are only outdone by the performances, notably Dafoe, who is always excellent and the children; Brooklynn Prince, Valeria Cotto and Aiden Malik. The extras are interesting enough, the best being the making-of documentary. I would recommend this Blu-ray to any film fans out there. It is deserved of all its accolades.
