(aka "Rökkur" )
directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen
Iceland 2017
A gay drama turned mind-bending, quasi-supernatural thriller with a handful of unsettling images and one perfect scare, RIFT opens as student Gunnar (Björn Stefánsson) is compelled by a call in the middle of the night from ex-lover Einar (Sigurður Þór Óskarsson) to drive to the countryside to Rökkur and the country cottage of Einar's parents. Initially fearing that Einar is suicidal, Gunnar soon gives credence to Gunnar's cryptic remarks about feeling as if there is someone else with him in the dark when someone tries to break on the first night and he starts sighting a dark figure across the nearby lava fields that is, at times, Einar sleepwalking or sometimes playing inappropriately-timed games of hide and seek. At first Gunnar suspects that the figure might be a prowler who has been reported breaking into the area's cottages, and then possibly the old farmer who is rumored to be quite aggressively "frisky" with young male hired farmhands, or possibly a hookup-gone-wrong who has been texting Einar. As the figure sometimes becomes a little boy who Einar recalls seeing years earlier when they were last at Rökkur, he starts to question whether Einar's childhood imaginary friend Lemmoy may still be around whether he has outgrown him or not. |

Comments |
Breaking Glass' barely dual-layer disc does well enough with the progressive, anamorphic image with its anamorphic scope softness and bold color correction, but the burnt-in subtitles are tiny and sometimes hard to read against bright backgrounds. The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track gets the job done but we have no confirmation as to whether stereo or 5.1 was the original mixing configuration. Extras include eleven minutes of deleted scenes and a trailer. |
