(aka " A Woman's Life")
Directed by Stéphane Brizé
France
A powerful adaptation of Guy de
Maupassant s first novel 'Une vie', A Woman s
Life is a timeless story of love, betrayal and
anguish set in the repressive patriarchal world of early
19th century Normandy. Jeanne (Judith Chemla) is a young woman full of childish dreams and innocence when she returns home after finishing her schooling in a convent. Yet little by little her illusions are stripped away when she marries a local Viscount, Julien de Lamare (Swann Arlaud), who reveals himself to be a miserly and adulterous partner. This poignant period drama from French director Stéphane Brizé (The Measure of a Man) has impressed audiences and critics alike with its tragic tone and striking performances. The film competed at the 73rd Venice Film Festival, where it won the Fipresci Prize for Best Film in competition, and now comes to UK audiences in a Blu-ray special edition that includes a selection of fascinating extra features. *** Adapted from the novel Une vie by Guy de Maupassant, A Woman's Life is a tale of tormented love embedded in the restrictive social and moral codes of marriage and family in 19th century Normany. Upon finishing her schooling in a convent, young arisocrat Jeanne (Judith Chemla) marries local Viscount Julien de Lamare (Swann Arlaud), who soon reveals himself to be a miserly and unfaithful husband. As she navigates his chronic infidelity, pressure from her family and community, and the alternating joys and burdens of motherhood, Jeanne's rosy illusions about her privileged world are slowly stripped away. |

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. Arrow's Blu-ray transfer is supporting this gorgeous 1.33:1 aspect ratio film. The natural lighting helps this rich period drama and the dual-layered 1080P transfer's immaculate appearance - it has an even presentation with smatterings of impressive depth and detail. It is flawless with over-embellishment of colors or contrast. This frequently looks both stunning and natural.
The audio transfer offers both a DTS HD master 5.1 surround or a linear PCM stereo - both 16-bit in the original French language. The film has few separation necessities and a score by Olivier Baumont - his only film credit. The film's gentle simplicity is also well supported by the lossless audio. Arrow add optional English subtitles on their Region 'B' Blu-ray disc.
In the supplements Arrow have included the 27-minute From the Novel to the Film featurette by Stéphane Brizé in which the director talks about adapting Maupassant's work, shot in Paris, January 2017 in French with English subtitles. Making A Woman s Life runs 19-minutes and has interviews with cinematographer Antoine Litslé, and sound engineer Pascal Jammes reflecting on the production process. There is a stills gallery and original trailer plus the package has a reversible sleeve featuring original French poster art and newly commissioned UK artwork and the first pressing receives an illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Margaret Deriaz.
A Woman's Life is such beautiful, compelling, cinema. The 19th-century France period art direction is graceful, with sparse dialogue allowing the rich visuals to explain the lifestyle and emotions. The Arrow Blu-ray is a great way to enjoy this warm, atmospheric drama. Absolutely recommended!- Gary Tooze |
