Based on the comic novel by brothers George and Weedon Grossmith, the titular DIARY OF A NOBODY belongs to Charles Pooter (Hugh Bonneville, GET WELL SOON, a clerk who aspires to the middle class. Keeping a respectable house with wife Carrie, son Willy (away at university), a housekeeper, and cultivating an atmosphere of sophistication, and proud of his position, Charles' exaggerated sense of self-importance is ripe for deflating. The source of comedy is not his "witty" observations but in the many minor and major social faux pas he makes out of ignorance or his effrontery at the supposed rudeness of those who he treats as being beneath him. His best friends Comings and Gowing - cannot be depended upon for dignified behavior, while his son has rechristened himself "Lupin" and has an inclination towards amateur dramatics that extends to his love life. A one-man-show for Bonneville addressed to the camera in the otherwise empty but well-appointed sets with occasional offscreen chatter, DIARY OF A NOBODY is both poignant and funny, with Bonneville's stuffy hero somewhat more relatable than the protagonist of KEEPING UP APPEARANCES. As Charles endures more embarrassment and even has his livelihood threatened by the carelessness and recklessness of others, the audience can sympathize with what little he really wants out of life while also revealing a genuine lack of cynicism ("for the first time in my life, I was inclined to indulge in the radical thought that perhaps money was not properly divided").

Comments

Previously available on DVD from BBC, this four-episode, two hour series looks quite nice on Second Sight's dual-layer DVD with gleaming wood, warmly lit interiors, and the occasional bold colors (like the red enamel paint that preoccupies the protagonist's interests for a period) coming across in standard definition without any distracting compression or other artefacting. The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track is reserved, consisting primarily of Bonneville's voice, some musical accompaniment, and offscreen voices or other noises. Optional English HoH subtitles are fairly comprehensive.
