An Argentinian remake of the French film INTOUCHABLES, the true story of the friendship between wealthy quadriplegic French businessman Philippe Pozzo di Borgo and Algerian ex-convict Abdel Sellou (also being remade in the states with Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart), INSEPARABLES moves the setting to Argentina as gardener's assistant Tito (Rodrigo De la Serna, MOTORCYCLE DIARIES) quits his job in a huff and is thrown out by his adoptive aunt. Despite his inexperience and impatience, Tito finds himself hired to be the new therapeutic assistant for quadriplegic businessman Felipe (Oscar Martínez, EMPTY NEST) who wants someone who does not pity him. Tito settles into a cushy lifestyle and makes plenty of mistakes while seeing to Felipe's care but starts to form a bond with the older man and proceeds to turn the household upside down with his own way of fixing things: exasperating housekeeper Ivonne (Alejandra Flechner), flirting with secretary Verónica (Carla Peterson), badgering Felipe's moody daughter Elisa (Rita Pauls) to respect her father and to demand respect from her own boyfriend (Franco Masini, THE CLAN), and pushing Felipe to meet in person the woman with which he has been exchanging a string of love letters; however, Felipe cares too much for Tito to saddle him with taking care of an old man for the rest of his own days and Tito discovers that his own family needs him in spite of how they have parted ways. De la Serna and Martinez are charming performers, and the film is seemingly approved by the real life people who inspired it (footage of whom appear before the end credits), but the film never quite fully explores the negative and positive potentials of brash Tito playing fast and loose with other people's problems like an ersatz Mary Poppins. As such, the film is a pleasant comedy enlivened by its leads but never truly emotionally involving.

Comments

Like most contemporary Argentinian mainstream productions shot on film or digital, INSEPARABLES is an exceedingly handsome production, and Omnibus' progressive, anamorphic DVD for this RED Epic-lensed production just edges over to the second layer but the encode gets the job done, and the original 5.1 mix has been retained along with a serviceable 2.0 stereo downmix. Optional English subtitles are free of any glaring errors. Sadly, there are no extras apart from some start-up trailers.
