(aka 'A Good Lawyer's Wife' or 'Baramnan gajok' or 'Une femme coréenne')

Directed by Sang-soo Im
South Korea
2003

Dancer Wen Su Li and lawyer Huang Zhengmin are married, the husband was busy with work, social interaction and accompanied by the old lover Yeon, often early to late return. Marriage and still continue to dance after the husband and his life, she began to find a cold feeling; later she met the boy next door, they began to secretly with his sexual behavior. Huang Zhengmin left Yeon side, but she did not have much love; until she has his own flesh, Huang Zhengmin is willing to spend more time with her. This is the case, Wen Su Li and Huang Zhengmin the couple will each have their own day of extramarital affairs ....

Interesting Korean drama involving the dysfunctional relationship of a married couple who seem temporarily willing to live with their affectionless deficiencies. He has an adulterous affair on the side while she (played by So-ri Moon who you may remember as Venice Film Fest. Best actress winner as the quadriplegic in 'Oasis". She also had a lesser role in another Chang-dong Lee film - "Peppermint Candy") rebels by awkwardly seducing the young, moody boy next door. Multiple family tragedies both attract and eventually repel their marital bonds. Although I didn't find anything in it poignant and it does seem to take a while before the wheels are spinning, I still enjoyed the viewing experience. This film has some pretty raw sexual energy exposing itself on screen and also an unforgettably horrific moment that I won't spoil for you. A typically harsh Korean drama teetering on the perverse and bizarre.

Comments:

At some point in the past we reviewed a Starmax SE (2 disc) DVD of A Good Lawyer's Wife. It had plenty of extras including 2 commentaries (both in Korean), a making of, a Sex in Korea featurettes, deleted scenes etc. But, as with so many Asian films on DVD, it has evaporated into the ether. This Taiwanese SD transfer exists (along with a similar Hong Kong DVD.)

Both are inferior to the Starmax - interlaced,, single-layered, not particularly sharp but anamorphic. It seems to be available and reasonably priced but is bare-bones and weak, although the image is watchable.

It offers an, error free, superfluous Dolby surround track and optional, English or Traditional Chinese, subtitles.

No extras at all. I think I liked the story in my initial viewing years ago and it has held up only moderately well. It has quite a bit of nudity and sex scenes. The film is mediocre but some may be interested in So-ri Moon whom you may recall from the highly regarded first two films Peppermint Candy and Oasis, plus a bit part in The Housemaid (2010.)The low price offers some value.
