Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot
France 1960
Beautiful, troubled Dominique Marceau (Brigitte Bardot) came to bohemian Paris to escape the suffocation of provincial life, only to wind up in a courtroom, accused of a terrible crime: the murder of her lover (Band of Outsiders’ Sami Frey). As the trial commences and the lawyers begin tangling over Dominique’s fate, the Oscar-nominated La vérité, directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot (Diabolique), delves into her past, reconstructing her struggle to find a foothold in the city. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of an impulsive young woman misunderstood and mistreated by those around her, and of her ultimately tragic affair with an up-and-coming conductor. With an astonishing performance by Bardot, Clouzot’s affecting and intricately constructed film—a huge late-career success for the French master—renders a harsh verdict against a hypocritical and moralistic society. *** This French-Italian romantic crime thriller is titled The Truth in English. Henri-Georges Clouzot directed sexpot Brigitte Bardot as Dominique Marceau, who is accused of killing her boyfriend. The question for the jury is whether the murder was premeditated or a crime of passion. Marceau had come from a small town to take up a sexually adventuresome life on the Left Bank in Paris. She has an affair with Gilbert Tellier (Sami Frey), the boyfriend of her sister Annie (Marie-Jose Nat). Dominique moves on to other romances, but Tellier won't let go of her. They fight and eventually separate. Tellier becomes a renowned orchestra conductor while Dominique descends into prostitution. She eventually learns that her sister and Tellier are engaged, and this knowledge leads up to the events that lead her to court. Excerpt from B+N located HERE |

Criterion bring Henri-Georges Clouzot's courtroom drama "La Vérité"
to
Blu-ray
on both sides of the Atlantic. It's on a dual-layered
Blu-ray
in 1080P with a very high bitrate. It is advertised as a 'New 4K
digital restoration'. Grain textures are prominent. It is in
the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio and looks very strong with no blemishes
and balanced contrast with the consistent rich grain being the notable
feature. Armand Thirard's (Clouzot's
The Wages of Fear,
Les Diabolique etc.) well conceived cinematography are exquisite
