WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Hello friends! In the current environment it is getting more and more difficult for us to maintain the website. Our income has severely been diminished by the increasing number of DVD/Blu-ray producers selling discs from their own sites. At present they don't offer us affiliate commissions which are our major source of income (Amazon, Barnes and Noble etc.). To continue producing comparisons, reviews and articles, we regretfully request YOUR assistance in the form of small monthly donations. We have started a Patreon page with the hopes that some of our followers would be willing to donate to keep DVDBeaver alive. We are a small niche, so your generosity is vital to our existence.

To those that are unfamiliar, Patreon is a secure/verified third-party service where users can agree to a monthly donation via credit card or PayPal by clicking the button below.

Directed by John Carroll Lynch
USA
2017

John Carroll Lynch s directorial debut featuring Harry Dean Stanton (Cool Hand Luke; Alien; Paris, Texas; Repo Man) in one of his last starring roles.

Lucky follows the spiritual journey of Harry Dean Stanton s character Lucky, a cantankerous, self-reliant 90 year old atheist, and the quirky characters that inhabit the Arizona town where he lives. Having out-lived and out-smoked all of his contemporaries, the fiercely independent Lucky finds himself at the precipice of life, thrust into a journey of self-exploration, leading towards that which is so often unattainable: enlightenment.

Released in the US just days after Stanton s death at age 91, Lucky, is at once a love letter to the life and career of Harry Dean Stanton as well as a meditation on mortality, loneliness, spirituality, and human connection. Eureka Entertainment are proud to present Lucky on Blu-ray and DVD, as well as the acclaimed 2012 documentary, Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction.

ADDITION: (December 2018) Eureka - Region 'B' - Blu-ray: Eureka bring us John Carroll Lynch's directorial debut, "Lucky" on Blu-ray. This film is also Harry Dean Stanton's swansong, having been released just days after his death at age 91. The film was shot digitally, and this Blu-ray seems to be a faithful transfer of that digital image. The 2.4:1 image has an immense amount of detail, most noticeable in the lines and crevices of Stanton's face. For a digital image, this has a very film-like texture. This film is housed on a dual-layered Blu-ray with a supportive bitrate.

Eureka give the option of watching "Lucky" with either a 16-bit linear PCM 2.0 stereo, or 16-bit 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. The 5.1 separation effects are there but they are modest, given the mostly quiet ambient surroundings in the film. For those without a surround setup, the stereo track will more than suffice. The film features original music from Elvis Kuehn. Some will recognize Con El Tiempo Y Un Ganchito performed by Pedro Infante, I See a Darkness by Johnny Cash, Volver, Volver performed by Harry Dean Stanton and Boogie Woogie by Liberace. There are optional English SDH subtitles on this Region 'B'
Blu-ray.

Thankfully, this release from Eureka includes the fabulous 2012 documentary, "Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction". This 76-minute feature involves interviews with Stanton and film friends such as David Lynch. The film, directed by Sophie Huber, is not your average talking head piece, allowing for quiet moments of introspection. One of the best "extras" on a release this year. Also here is a 14-minute interview with the director, John Carroll Lynch. "Logan Sparks & Drago Sumonja Interview" talks with the 2 writers about their work on the film. There is also a collector's booklet featuring a new essay by Jason Wood, and the transcript of a Q&A with director John Carroll Lynch.

Lucky is a great character-driven piece, full of great actors, notably directed by a character actor. The result is a movie full of quiet moments, captured in a beautiful widescreen vista. The inclusion of "Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction" makes this
Blu-ray a must-own. Don't hesitate.
