Compared by critics to a "gay Gatsby", the exquisitely-mounted and emotionally resonant THOSE PEOPLE finds shy Jewish art student Charlie Kinberg (Jonathan Gordon, GOD'S POCKET) pining from afar for charismatic, outwardly gay, childhood friend Sebastian Blackworth (Jason Ralph, A MOST VIOLENT YEAR). Perhaps the most devoted and Sebastian's friends - along with career-driven London (ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Meghann Fahy), part-time Vogue correspondent/part-time waitress Ursula (Britt Lower, BESIDE STILL WATERS), and "token straight boy" Wyatt (Chris Conroy, WET BEHIND THE EARS) - Charlie insulates his friend from the social backlash when his father (Daniel Gerroll, CHARIOTS OF FIRE) is sent to prison for securities fraud and the heir apparent becomes the most hated man in New York. During a slumming visit to a dive piano bar, Charlie is taken aback when he is the one who is hit on by charming pianist Tim (Haaz Sleiman, ASSASSIN'S CREED) before being swept away by Sebastian and company. When London abandons the gang after a photograph of her in Sebastian's company reflects poorly on her at a job interview and Sebastian has to fire the family's loyal housekeeper as funds start to dry up, Charlie moves in with Sebastian to keep him company - despite the disapproval of Charlie's otherwise sympathetic and supportive mother (Alison Mackie, SLIVER) - and the two briefly retreat into games of their childhood. When Charlie next meets Tim, the Lebanese traveling musician is playing with an orchestra at a high society event. Tim sweeps Charlie off his feet and they enjoy two weeks together before Charlie becomes aware of Sebastian's downward spiral in light of his father's suicide attempt in prison; and Tim dumps Charlie when he realizes that he will always choose Sebastian over him. Broken Charlie pushes Sebastian to find out if they have a chance together, which may have tragic repercussions for Sebastian who knows little more than using people physically for his emotional dependence and believes he has nothing to offer in return with the loss of his family fortune.

Comments

Wolfe Video afford this attractively-lensed production a high-bitrate, progressive, anamorphic widescreen presentation. The Dolby Digital 5.1 (and 2.0 stereo downmix) is appropriately subdued in most scenes with the surrounds more active for the New York exteriors and location sequences while more conservative use is made of the sound stage in the more intimate interiors. Optional English SDH subtitles are also included. The extras consist of a deleted Christmas scene set late in the film as well as a quartet of comparisons of initial readings and final versions of scenes. The film's trailer and previews are also included.
