(aka "Wataha" )

directed by Michal Gazda
Poland 2014

When the hunting lodge where the Bieszczady Mountains Border Guard are holding a retirement party for senior member Siwy (Milogost Reczek, THE WITCHER) is blown up, icy and relentless prostecutor Iga Dobosz (Aleksandra Poplawska, DOWN THE COLORFUL HILL) turns her suspicions towards the sole survivor Captain Wiktor Rebrow (Leszek Lichota, LINCZ) who received a cryptic text seconds before the blast. Despite the deaths of his close comrades and his co-worker girlfriend Ewa (Julia Pogrebinska, PITBULL) in the explosion as well as his own injuries, Iga suspects Wiktor of being in cahoots with smugglers along the Ukraine border whose interests include alcohol, weapons, refugees, and human trafficking. In spite of his being under suspicion and his determination to resign, Wiktor's expert knowledge of the terrain and its people proves too invaluable to new commander Markowski (Andrzej Zielinski, ALL ABOUT MY PARENTS) and his new team which includes Wiktor's steadfast friend Adam 'Grzywa' Grzywaczewski (Bartlomiej Topa, THREE COLORS: WHITE), eager-to-please tracker Piotr 'Rambo' Wojcik (Maciej Mikolajczyk, KATYN), field worker Natalia Tatarkiewicz (Magdalena Poplawska, FEAR OF FALLING), and hero-worshipping trainee Aga Malek (Dagmara Bak, AMONG US). Wiktor and Grzywa suspect that sawmill owner/smuggler Kalita (Mariusz Saniternik) is responsible for the blast or his Russian partner Metro (Oleg Drach, THE SECOND FRONT) while Iga seems driven to pin everything on Wiktor. When Wiktor, unable to stay in the home he shared with Ewa, moves into a cabin owned by former guard Luczak (Jacek Lenartowicz, ANGELS OF DARKNESS) and discovers one of the earrings Ewa was wearing the night of the blast, he suspects that she is still alive and that she might have been the actual target instead of him because of her undercover work.

Comments

Arrow Films' splits the six episodes of this Polish series between two dual-layer discs, the running times of each episode (most running around forty-odd minutes) allow for a fair mid-range bitrate and good image quality. Audio defaults a a Dolby Digital 5.1 track (a 2.0 stereo mix is also included but there is no setup menu) and optional English subtitles are available. There are no extras.
