America 2015
On the way to the reunion of his mother Cindy's (Robin Weigert, THE UNDYING) side of the family in Nebraska, California teen Ryder (Logan Miller, THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT) plans to come out to his redneck relatives but his mother makes it known to him that the topic of his sexuality is as much a no-no as the fact that his father Don (Richard Schiff, THE AUTOMATIC HATE) is Jewish. Although he keeps mum about being gay, Ryder does draw attention with his loud and very short red shorts ("Is that a swimsuit?"). Nine-year-old cousin Molly (Ursula Parker, LOST IN AUSTIN), however, thinks Ryder is a hoot and wants him to draw pictures for her, tie her shoes, and generally monopolizes his attention. When Molly shoes Ryder the barn and she comes running back with a spot of blood on her dress, Uncle Keith (Josh Hamilton, KICKIGN AND SCREAMING) flies into a rage and makes a scene in front of the family, all but accusing Ryder of molestation. Cindy repeatedly blocks Ryder's attempts to defend himself by telling his extended family that he is gay (although it its unclear if the revelation would have had any effect since he is soon branded a "California pervert"). With father Don ineffectual and Cindy and Keith at each other's throats, mortified Ryder runs away and hides in an abandoned barn where his mother surprisingly tells him he would be better off for the night. Things seem to have cooled down the next day when Molly's older sister Abbey (Ashley Gerasimovich, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN) shows up at grandma's house with an apology from Keith and an invitation for Ryder to lunch. Believing his manhood is being challenged, Ryder wants to make a statement at a time when Cindy wants to smooth things over. A lunch of tacos becomes an unbearably tense battle of wills between the benignly sinister Keith and untested Ryder that may inadvertently haul other long buried family secrets out of the closet. |

Comments |
Given the
film's brevity, Film Movement has elected to give it as
high a bitrate as possible to their progressive,
anamorphic encode of this Red Epic-photographed film.
The English Dolby Digital 5.1 track has a nice surround
spread with omnipresent cicadas and birdsong supporting
clear dialogue as well as judiciously-employed
directional effects. English Closed Captions are also
included. |
