(aka "Tu veux... ou tu veux pas?" or "The Missionaries")

directed by Tonie Marshall
France/Belgium 2014

Fired from her sales job in Japan for sleeping with her most lucrative clients ("This is not a geisha house"), sex mad Judith (Sophie Marceau, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH) returns to Paris and considers a change of vocations. Late for an interview as a dental assistant, Judith runs into Lambert (singer Patrick Bruel, PARIS-MANHATTAN) who just happens to need a student trainee replacement for his tandem couples therapy practice. A former pilot who lost his job due to his sex addition, Lambert has been attending an abstinence support group and finds himself severely tempted by Judith's outgoing manner (and her green shoes). As therapists, the two manage to balance each other out with her reducing every issue to sex and him so eager to look past physical needs for the emotional; but as potential romantic partners, they are a disaster. Lambert's abstinence sponsor Alain (François Morel) advises him not to fire her but to keep her on as a challenge to his willpower, but he quickly becomes jealous of his best friend Bruno's (Philippe Lellouche) flirtation with Judith who finds that Lambert is less attractive to her when he relents to her overtures with the intention of getting it over with. After a public blow-up during a forum presentation, Lambert falls off the wagon (and ends up in Belgium) while a boozing Judith gets counsel from a squirrel (Patrick Braoudé). Chanteuse Sylvie Vartan (MALPERTUIS) appears as Lambert's man-starved mother while André Wilms (LE HAVRE) is Judith's perfumer uncle and Jean-Pierre Marielle (TOUS LES MATINS DU MONDE) has a cameo as himself.

Comments

Although running under ninety minutes and free of substantive special features, Strand has given their DVD of this film a high bitrate, dual-layer encode. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is a tad more playful than expected for a romantic comedy due to the two protagonists' fanciful daydreams and nightmares along with the film's use of music. The optional English subtitles are without any glaring errors. The only extras are a trailer for the film and previews for four other titles.
