Spain 2011
Filmmakers Gaby Amione, Pau Balagué, Miriam Cañamares, Josecho de Linares, Claudia del Campo (as Irene C. Rodríguez), Gemma Ferraté, Alba Giralt, Alejandro Javaloyas, Marc Juvé, Carlos Pérez-Reche, Eduard Riu, Javier Sanz, and Bruno Sarabia chart the year-long love story of Barcelona exchange students Lucas (Marcel Borràs, FOR THE GOOD OF OTHERS) and Sun (Saras Gil, THIS NEW WORLD) in what fellow Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (THE ORPHANAGE) calls "one of the best Spanish movies I've seen in a very long time." That might be an overstatement, but the film or rather "these films" in chronological order are able to make something fun of the cliched love story's comic highs and moving in its melodramatic lows. Utilizing a variety of cinematic and generic styles from reality show, sitcom, art film, and melodrama to more modern, verité filming styles, PUZZLED LOVE is composed of thirteen short films detailing decisive moments from each month Lucas and Sun are together (and apart). Initially at each others' throats as they vie for a desirable bedroom in an apartment shared by ethereal Irene (co-director Claudia del Campo), slovenly Topo (Tots els camins de Déu), and horndog Pierre (François Justet), studious Lucas and abrasive party girl Sun experience physical attraction in September and relieve tension with a bathroom quickie in October. Lucas experiences jealousy when Sun's boyfriend from Chicago Matthew (Benjamin Nathan-Serio) comes to visit while Sun becomes jealous in December when she goes home to Chicago for the holidays and a video chat session with Lucas turns into an argument and then into a lip-sync battle. Sun plays a well-intentioned but cruel trick on Lucas in January but it is not until the pair are "married" by their roommates (in one of many "themed parties" that appear to be popular among Spanish youth going by this movie) in February that they realize that their relationship has an expiration date. After seeing each other at their most insecure, they resolve to - in an Antonioni-esque episode - to make the most of their remaining months instead of concentrating on saying goodbye come August. |

Although the back cover cites a seventy-four minute running time, the film actually runs ten minutes longer in this progressive, anamorphic, single-layer transfer. The image is variable given the different filmic styles of the directors (some more formal, some more verité), different cameras, and shifting aspect ratios. The master seems to have been sourced from a Spanish domestic version since the new burnt-in English subtitles are accompanied by older burnt-in Spanish subtitles for the English dialogue and some song lyrics (with the mismatch more apparent when the newer English subtitles appear above the Spanish ones during the musical bits). The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track is also variable, with the concert scenes distorting at the high end. There are no extras apart from start-up trailers. |
