USA 2013
On the one year anniversary of her boyfriend's mysterious murder, four friends of Leslie van Hooten (Callie Stephens) - horny Regina (Emily Bennett) and studly Tom (Danny Miller), studious and religious Thad (Jonathan Helvey) and sexually-frustrated "church girl" Patty (Summer Bills) - rally around her for support as they make a trip to her family's country house. Stopping in town, they unfortunately catch the eye of recently-released career criminal Cliff (Allan Kayser, Bubba from TV's MAMA'S FAMILY) and drug-addicted buddy Buzz (David Willis) who were already planning on a home invasion to fund their habit. As Leslie's parents (the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD remake's William Moseley and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS's Leslie Easterbrook) leave the five college students alone for the night while they drive down to pick up "Aunt Bea", Cliff and Buzz make their move on the unsuspecting victims and soon discover that all is not as it seems in the HOUSE OF THE WITCHDOCTOR. Unabashedly violent and gory with a modest amount of T&A that looks generous by the standards of a lot of recent exploitation throwbacks, the film is nevertheless let down by bum characters and a "surprise" twist broadcast by the film's very title. The youngsters imbue their thin characterizations with some depth but Moseley and Easterbrook - as well as ILSA, THE WICKED WARDEN herself Dyanne Thorne (POINT OF TERROR) and her husband Howard Maurer making cameo appearances - are unimaginatively deployed while Kayser's sub-Krug rapist/murder might have been more interesting in another film but is just as much a caricature as the other veteran players. |

Comments |
Breaking Glass' anamorphic, progressive widescreen encode gets the job done with the film's attractive digitally-lensed imagery while the Dolby Digital 5.1 track has some atmospheric and directional effects but of course does not compare with studio efforts. English Closed Captioning is included. The sole substantial extra is an audio commentary with the director. Breaking Glass has also released the film on manufactured-on-demand BD-R. |
