(aka "Dorchester's Revenge: The Return of Crinoline Head" )
directed by Tommy Faircloth
USA 2014
Uninterested in post-SCREAM twists despite a handful of characters who could be red herrings or obsessives eager to follow in the titular character's footsteps, DOLLFACE is well-photographed, reasonably well-acted, with relatively likable characters but falls short when it comes to the genre's requisite gore (just as well as a crab-munched severed head is laughable) and is rather uneven in its application of humor (with padding featuring three drag queen victims seeming like major padding). Originally titled DORCHESTER'S REVENGE: THE RETURN OF CRINOLINE HEAD as a sequel to the more obscure CRINOLINE HEAD, the more technically-slick DOLLFACE finds a college class of history students deciding to explore a local urban legend for their midterm assignment: the serial killer Crinoline Head. The son of reclusive dollmaker Mary Stewart (Suzie Haines), young Dorchester obeyed his mother's rule to always stay close to her even months after her death when he was found by authorities to have partially cannibalized her corpse. Escaping from a state facility at age eighteen, Dorchester posed as a college student and invited a group of friends to his mother's lakehouse haunt for a night of grisly slaughter that only left two survivors including student-turned-history professor Paul Donner (Jason Vail, PARANORMAL CAPTIVITY). Swiping the professor's notes for a long-abandoned book on his experiences, enterprising Dave (Christian James) hopes not only to pass the class with his paper but also to achieve fame and fortune if he can prove that Crinoline Head is still alive and active on his old hunting grounds. Accompanied by awkward and long-suffering research partner James (Gunner Willis), adventurous Shelby (Kirsten Ray) and timid, virginal Donna (Leah Wiseman, DISMEMBERING CHRISTMAS), the quartet find the lakehouse burnt to the ground and shotgun-toting slattern Betsy (Debbie Rochon, AS NIGHT FALLS) as the on-site caretaker to scare off the curious. Joined by skanky Janet (Elizabeth Mears), horny Scott (Nicholas A. Sweezer), and stoned Reggie (Cameron Turner) hoping to piggyback on their project, the fractious group soon splits up to be picked off by Crinoline Head (John Kap). |

Although the DVD was released last year, Breaking Glass is promoting their line of Amazon VOD horror titles, so we thought we would review a couple to remind fans that these titles are available on physical media (some with extras). DOLLFACE gets a serviceable progressive, anamorphic encode on Breaking Glass' barely dual-layer disc thanks to bright and well-exposed videography and a seeming minimum of digital color correction skewing the naturalistic look of the film (a couple clipped highlights in the sun-dappled shots of the woods are likely down to the photography). The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track gets the job done with a rather overemphatic track of birdcalls and crickets backing up the dialogue and scoring. English Closed Captions are available. The few extras are welcome but unexceptional. |
