directed by William Sullivan
USA 2015

A Seed and Spark-funded venture, THAT'S NOT US - from director William Sullivan (JANE WANTS A BOYFRIEND) and partner/cinematographer Derek Dodge - is heavily-improvised but wonderfully engaging ensemble piece in which the relationships of three couples - lesbian Jackie (Nicole Pursell) and Alex (Sarah Wharton), gay James (Mark Berger) and Spencer (David Rysdahl), and straight Liz (Elizabeth Gray) and Dougie (Tommy Nelms) - are tested during a long weekend getaway at an island cottage in a gated community during the off-season. Liz and Dougie are still in the honeymoon phase, "boning" before they even unpack, but he's competitive and she's pushy. James and Spencer are domestically blissful, but Spencer may be moving away since he has been accepted into a prestigious University of Chicago teaching program. Jackie and Alex - the only couple who do not think to push the single beds together - are going through a dry spell. While Alex feels like the weekend away is an opportunity to recapture their intimacy, Jackie feels the pressure of high expectations. James is finding it harder to be happy for Spencer's once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and is even more annoyed that Spencer is downplaying his own excitement. When Dougie reluctantly admits that he does not know how to ride a bike, the disastrous aftermath of her attempts to teach him reveal their differing views on a perceived imbalance in their partnership. Given the improvisational nature of the dialogue, performances are excellent (one hopes that we see more of all six of the newcomers in the future) while the handheld photography is reasonably slick yet responsive to the performances (if the editing assembles scenes from multiple improvised takes, it hides it well). A rare gay interest title in which the emotional issues of the characters transcends their sexuality, with all three couples confronting issues that the others could face at different points in their relationships.

Comments

Strand Releasing's dual-layer discs affords a typically high bitrate encode to this progressive, anamorphic presentation. The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track is free of any defects while the mix is not particularly ambitious. Optional English SDH subtitles are also included. The deleted scenes offer a look at the film's photography in RAW mode without color correction, a bit more of Spencer lost in the Sunken Forest, and more on Doug's injury. In the "Improv on Film" featurette, the director, cinematographer, and actors reveal that the script was a twenty page outline with the dialogue left up to the actors to improvise. Most interesting is the film festival featurette in which the director, cinematographer, and cast tour with the film's premieres at Toronto's Inside Out festival, San Francisco's FrameLine, Los Angeles' Outfest, and Montreal's Image+Nation. Trailers for the film and other Strand Releases round out the extras.
