(aka "Bad Summer" or "Bad Boys Crazy Girls")

directed by Don Argott, Sheena M. Joyce
USA 2015

As the school year comes to an end, "soft and doughy" guidance counselor Jeff (THE MINDY PROJECT's Adam Pally) and "clinically abstinent" school librarian Anne (HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER's Sarah Burns) decide that they both need a change in their love lives. Gifted a leather jacket by his womanizing neighbor Max (VEEP's Reid Scott), Jeff decides to make himself over into a bad boy, while reality TV fan Anne decides to go the "crazy pussy" route and play hard to get with unrequited crush Max. By becoming people totally unrecognizable to their family and friends - Jeff's parents (ALICE's Marceline Hugot and VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA's Kevin Dunn) who think he's gay, and Anne's only other confidant Julia (POST GRAD's Catherine Reitman) - they become popular with the opposite sex almost overnight only to lose their close friendship in the process. Having acquired a reputation as a "nasty white girl", Anne feels even more alienated when she discovers that Jeff seems to be in a less-than-casual relationship with the single mother (Mary Grill) of a child from their school. By this point, our two protagonists have so hilariously transformed themselves into such unlikable people that we don't really care how they will eventually find their way back together and realize that they are perfect for each other as everyone else has from the start.

The joint feature debut of documentarians Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce, SLOW LEARNERS is a simultaneously raunchy and sweet take on the story of a two people who are the last to recognize that they are meant for each other (here coupled with the resentment that people might think they should be with each other because no one else would have them). Although the leads are warm and engaging, the script becomes a bit muddled past the setup as if the writers are trying to allow screentime for the comic shticks of its supporting cast - including THE OFFICE's Kate Flannery as the school principal, LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MYERS writer/sketch actor Peter Grosz, Pally's HAPPY ENDINGS' writer Gil Ozeri, SNL's Bobby Moynihan, and THE MIDDLE's Charlie McDermott among others - members and integrate them into scenes that elicit laughs but actually do little to advance the film. As such, it is more of a comedy composed of amusing sketches rather than a compelling narrative.

Comments

MPI's single-layer DVD features a serviceable progressive, anamorphic presentation of this HD-lensed film. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is generally front-oriented with the surrounds coming into play during the bar scenes and montages dominated by music. English SDH subtitles are also provided. There are no extras apart from the trailer.
