(aka "Oorlogsgeheimen" )
directed by Dennis Bots
Netherlands 2014
Love triangles and the bonds of friendship during wartime are nothing new to cinema, but the protagonists of SECRETS OF WAR are Dutch schoolboys Tuur (Maas Bronkhuyzen) and club-footed Lambert (Joes Brauers) who spend the summer of 1943 in the woods playing enemy soldiers in between fending off bullies and chores. Things change quickly when the school year starts and their friendship becomes an inseparable trio with new student Maartje (Pippa Allen) with whom they share their secret discovery of a cave hideout used by members of the resistance while she shares her own secret with just one of them. The two boys are soon at odds when Lambert's Nazi sympathizer father (Loek Peters) is appointed town mayor, and Tuur's father (Ad van Kempen) forbids him to associate with Lambert (who also makes new enemies out of old friends at school). When Tuur then discovers that his brother Leo (Nils Verkooijen) has joined the resistance, he risks everything to protect his family and his two best friends as the Nazi's search the town for fugitives, dissenters, and Jews. |

Film Movement's progressive, anamorphic, dual-layer DVD of this handsomely-lensed Arri Alexa feature looks quite good for a standard definition presentation, only looking a tad flat and indistinct when it comes to the fine details of the sprawling landscapes and forests. The Dutch Dolby Digital 5.1 track is fairly involving in the surrounds when it comes to village life background sounds, rain storms, and sudden noises. The optional English subtitles do not translate some German dialogue, but these exchanges are summarized in Dutch with translation by other characters. English closed captioning is also included. Extras include a standard making-of featurette and a bonus unrelated short film in which an imaginary friend considers retirement when his creator starts growing up. |
