(aka "Von Mädchen und Pferden" )
directed by Monika Treut
Germany 2014
The latest film from Monika Treut (VIRGIN MACHINE), OF GIRLS AND HORSES is certainly a coming-of-age story of a sort, but the film is less concerned with the relationship itself than the creation of an idyll in which the relationship can flourish and all of the little things that could disrupt it (including the backdrop of anti-gay marriage chancellor Angela Merkel's 2013 re-election). Troubled teenager Alex (Ceci Schmitz-Chuh, THE UNPOLISHED) is shipped by her adoptive mother off to the countryside to straighten her out with an internship at a farm. Her supervisor Nina (Vanida Karun) nurtures the girl's fascination with horses but stays hands-off when it comes to the her issues with drugs and stealing; disturbed by the girl's seeming attraction (which may be provocation upon finding out that she is gay) and distracted by her own troubled relationship with city sophisticate Christine (Ellen Grell, SUMMER OF DREAMS) who does not share her passion for farm life. When Kathy (Alissa Wilms, AMOUR FOU) arrives for the holidays to learn to ride the horse her father has given to her, Alex is initially hostile to her presence because of the difference in their backgrounds (and because Nina treats her more like an employee while instructing Kathy). The two girls start to warm to each other with little else to do on the farm and in town, and friendship becomes infatuation that may turn into something more when the girls are left to watch the farm themselves while Nina heads to the city to work out things with Christine. |

Comments |
Despite having virtually no extras apart from trailers, Wolfe Video has admirably given this film a strong dual-layer, high bitrate, progressive, anamorphic encode that emphasizes the rustic textures of the settings. Audio is offered in a restrained 5.1 mix and a 2.0 downmix and the English subtitles are non-removable. |
