(aka "Loulou, l'incroyable secret" )
directed by Eric Omond
France/Belgium/Hungary 2013
Based on the "Loulou" books of Grégoire Solotareff (who co-wrote the screenplay with 365 Penguins Jean-Luc Fromental), WOLFY: THE INCREDIBLE SECRET's stylized animation may seem too naive for American children (and the violence is certain un-Disney), but the rather routine story is livened up by a wry script and art direction rich in references (such as a likeness of Goya's painting of Saturn devouring his own children). Wolfy, an orphaned wolf who grew up in the land of rabbits with his best friend Tom sharing his herbivorous lifestyle. One day, the gypsy witch Cornélia appears and reveals to Wolfy that his mother is Princess Olympe of Wolfenberg. Wolfy and Tom travel to Wolfenburg in search of her only to be told by the current reigning monarch Prince Loup-Andrea that Olympe was murdered by the "nofang" rebels that hide in the woods. Aware that the rebels are out to assassinate him and that wary that Wolfy - aka Prince Ludovic of Wolfenberg - could potentially usurp him, the aging Prince Loup-Andrea takes Wolfy under his wing and - with the help of the mercurial and "foxy" Scarlett - tries to awaken his bloodlust in time for the La Carne festival in which the "longfangs" hunt converge on the village to hunt the herbivores. |

Comments |
Cinedigm's single-layer, progressive, anamorphic transfer is generally attractive for standard definition, but the minute edge-enhancement that comes with some encoders' downscaling from high definition stands out in some of the higher contrast shots in animation. The only problem with the Dolby Digital 5.1 track is the English dubbing, which is the same bland style as the English dub tracks of most modern French films. It is a pity that the French track was not included (the French Blu-ray and DVD releases feature an audio commentary but are not English-friendly) as we lose the original vocal performances of WATER DROPS ON BURNING ROCKS' Malik Zidi as Wolfy (or Loulou), ELLES's Anaïs Demoustier as Scarlett, THE PREY's Stéphane Debac as Tom, MIDNIGHT IN PARIS' Marianne Basler as Olympe, and INDOCHINE's Carlo Brandt as Loup-Andrea. There are no subtitle options but English closed-captioning is included. The sole extra is a start-up trailer for another animated feature. |
