(aka "Era Uma Vez Eu, Verônica" or "Once Upon a Time Veronica")
directed by Marcelo Gomes
Brazil/France 2012
Upon finishing her exams, Verônica (Hermila Guedes, BOCA) begins her public health residency as a psychiatrist and soon discovers the difference between textbooks and teachers and the complexities of real people. Turning her analytic mind upon herself ("Patient, Veronica"), all of the ambiguities in her life form an existential crisis. Her casual sexual encounters becomes interpreted as a way of venting frustrations, her unwillingness to reciprocate to casual boyfriend Gustavo's (João Miguel, PERISCOPE) proclamations of love - while both of her best friends are constantly seeking true love - is indicative of a heart of stone, and her father's (W.J. Solha, NEIGHBORING SOUNDS) declining health and the cracks in their soon-to-be-condemned apartment building's foundations symbolize her own feelings about suffering and mortality. Almost in spite of her own insecurities, she becomes a hit with her patients (whose sometimes undefinable issues seem more momentous than her own) and her father continues to be proud of her as she flounders psychologically. The only cure for such psychoanalytical navel-gazing is a change in perception, but how can Verônica concentrate on enjoying life as it comes when everything is about to come crashing down? |

Big World Pictures' single layer DVD features a progressive, anamorphic transfer that is adequate for the bitrate (and the expected downscaling artifacts) but for a few white pixels at the top left corner of the frame throughout the film. The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo audio is well-rendered (I'm not sure what the original channel configuration is, but the sound mix is fairly restrained but for the beach scenes and a night club sequence). The yellow English subtitles are burnt-in and small but legible. The subtitle translation of the the title is "Once upon a time there was I, Veronica" (while the streaming version on Netflix is listed simply as "Veronica"). The only extras are two trailers for the film and trailers for IN BLOOM and A SUMMER'S TALE. |
