directed by John Huston
USA 1948

Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) arrives at a hotel in The Keys, Florida. A gangster, Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson), is holed up there awaiting his return to the major crime circuit in the U.S. after cooling his heels in Cuba. The hotel is run by handicapped James Temple (Lionel Barrymore) and his luscious daughter-in-law Nora (Lauren Bacall). Bogie's character served in the WWII with their deceased son/husband. Okay, if this description is not enough to wet your whistle, then there is not much more that I can say. A perfect vehicle to perpetuate the super stardom of Bogie, and I don't think Bacall has ever looked better (truly). Almost clinically great support from Robinson and Barrymore add this to the top of my Film-noir listing.

Comments:

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were obtained directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Warner Archive - Region FREE - Blu-ray February 16': Similar to The Big Sleep Blu-ray we have a fabulous image. It is darker, better grain, richer black levels and significantly more film-like. Another stirring Max Steiner score (Casablanca, The Caine Mutiny, Bird of Paradise, Beyond the Forest, Pursued etc. etc.) in lossless. Subtitles and DUBs supporting it's region freedom. Unfortunately, only a trailer as an extra (for shame.) Still an absolute must-own.

***

ON THE DVD: Although there is some minor damage, this image is excellent. Tight with film grain and no visible digital manipulation. It looks almost to the level of a Criterion. It must have come from a healthy print. The subtitles also are extremely well-done.

Audio quality is very good considering it is mono (original). Extras are pretty slim, but at least an attempt was made way back in 2000. This is a fine DVD for your collection.  out of
