NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc. Lionsgate's Blu-ray transfer is single-layered for the 2-hour feature and the bitrate is modest. The 1080P presentation doesn't loom stellar but is consistent in supporting the film. It has about a 2.39:1 aspect ratio and the image is probably not far from its Arri Alexa roots. Colors are bright, detail in close-ups is pleasing if there is softness. The film is more about the content than the visuals but there are some striking desert sequences and I enjoyed the film although the transfer is certainly not dynamic by any stretch.
The audio transfer is in a DTS-HD Master 5.1 track (24-bit) in the original English language. There are a couple of demonstrative effects with depth but the dialogue drives the film with a hallucination sequence that has weird noises associated with it. The score is by Darren Morze who has done a lot of short film work. There is a Dylan-esque song near the end. It all sounds excellent. Lionsgate add optional English (SDH) and Spanish subtitles on their Region 'A' Blu-ray disc
Only extras aside from previews is a standard 14-minute 'Making of' with cast and crew discussing the production.
I liked The Vanishing of Sidney Hall... certainly not your usual Hollywood film. It dealt with themes of creativity, suffering, authorship, influence, love, self-delusion, guilt... and I enjoyed the performances. I was attentive and, at times, fascinated with the story and it's unpredictable direction. The complaint is pretentiousness (as they said of PTA's Magnolia) - which I don't buy into. Many critics panned it. Definitely worth a spin, imo. Gary Tooze |
