(aka "Ride Report: Road to Rio" )

directed by Matt Kendall, Tiernan Turner
USA 2014

RIDE REPORT follows the sixty-nine day motorcycle journey of suburban twenty-somethings Tiernan Turner and Matt Kendall 10,000 miles from Las Vegas to Rio for Carnaval in search of adventure and, of course, girls. Lacking experience in mechanics and only fairly fluent in the Spanish language (and less so with Portuguese), the fratboy-ish duo's journey across borders and off the beaten path (or, rather, the uncharted areas on Google Maps) could have been a recipe for a highly-watchable disaster. Instead, the initially obnoxious but justifiably wary strangers in a foreign land become more likable as they are constantly surprised by the kind people who bail them out of jams along the way from couch surfing hosts, various members of the motorcycling community following their journey online, to kindly (and sometimes foxy) passersby who offer directions or a place to crash. Although it is not stated, both Turner and Kendall have sound and camera TV credits, so it comes as no surprise that they get some pretty although rough-hewn landscape shots throughout as well as some technically proficient coverage of their interactions (from the humorous to the awkward and tense). The narration by the filmmaker who shot the set-up material and arranged to meet them in Rio for the conclusion of their journey is largely unnecessary since the summing up makes their "life-changing" journey seem even less so.

Comments

Shot on a different video cameras on-the-fly in different lighting conditions, RIDE REPORT's single-layer, progressive transfer is variable but neither the technical faults in the videography or the low compression of the disc are enough to detract from one's enjoyment of the program. The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track is similarly variable but most of the dialogue is discernable with some muffled lines as well as a lot of the Spanish and Portuguese dialogue subtitled (with graphical text rather than traditional DVD subtitling).

Extras include a piece on the pair's work on their bikes before the trip and another on couch surfing (with more on one of their hosts), but neither can really be considered deleted scenes so much as contextual featurettes. The deleted scenes section actually includes extensions of scenes in the feature and additional bits of eccentricity from some of the people they encounter. The interview outtakes consist mainly of talking heads with the main pair shot months and days before the trip as they attempt to explain what it means for them. The disc also includes trailers for three other Cinema Libre documentaries.
