USA 2012
Mormon RJ (Nick Ferrucci, TANDEM HEARTS) is disappointed that his missionary work is Oregon, only taking him six hours away from his Idaho hometown. The former high school athlete soon feels out of his depth away from his perfect home, family, and girlfriend. He is paired with Chris (Benjamin Farmer, THE ROOMIES) who proves more confident and charismatic; however, both find their faith shaken by a series of encounters with people who challenge their beliefs or just seem perfectly well off without two twenty-year-olds telling them that they need to rethink their entire existence. Long-suppressed desires bloom as the two confide in one another about their other frustrations, and sexual expression is only one of the "bad things" these two Mormons engage in on a journey of self-discovery (which includes watching uncensored movies - RJ quips in his narration that the Mormon cut of GOODFELLAS only lasts thirty-seven minutes - smoking pot with an Iraq vet (Brian Allard, UN-HUMAN), and not turning the other cheek when a redneck them over an innocent-yet-intimate public gesture. The pair's "slacking off" does not go unnoticed by the prying Elder Harris (Quinn Allan, THE ROOMIES) and RJ and Chris soon find that they will have to confront their families and their religion head-on. |

For the most part, Breaking Glass' high bitrate handles the largely clean videography nicely. Some darker scenes evince a bit of noise, but one cannot be sure how much of that is attributable to the original HD videography and how much to the disc's encoding (thus far, titles on Breaking Glass' QC Cinema sub-label have been less than stellar in technical terms). The 5.1 audio is very suitably restrained, although there are a few rare instances when the dialogue probably should have been ADR'd (but that's more of a limitation of the production than the encoding). English Closed Captioning is also included.
The making-of featurette is brief and does not really provide enough information about the director's research (making one wonder how confrontational his inquiries were if at all) while the earnest comments of some of the other participants are not always well-served by the final cut). A trailer, photo gallery, and trailers for other Breaking Glass titles (from their QC Cinema sub-label) round out the package. |
