directed by Ian Clark
UK 2012

Unspectacular yet refreshingly diverting, THE FACILITY is thankfully not a "found footage" movie despite the usual preamble text, and first time writer/director Ian Clark takes some risks (for a low budget horror movie that will find its largest audience in rental, retail, and streaming) in overturning expectations set up by the familiar scenario. Seven volunteer test subjects - "big dog" realtor Jed (Oliver Coleman, THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL), journalist Katie (Nia Roberts, THE THEORY OF FLIGHT), puppyish post-grad Adam (Aneurin Barnard, CITADEL), aimless student Carmen (Skye Lourie, THE HOLDING), introverted Arif (Amit Shah, THE BLUE TOWER), and professional lab rats Joni (Alex Reid, THE DESCENT) and Morty (Steve Evets, ANNA KARENINA) - arrive at the isolated Limebrook Clinic to participate in a two week trial of a Prosyntrex Pharmaceuticals experimental drug called Pro9. They will be sharing a wing in the largely empty facility and are ordered not to leave the building and advised not to engage in strenuous activity by the supervising physician Dr. Mansell (Chris Larkin, ANGELS & INSECTS). Hours after the first injection, the first of the test subjects (followed soon by the second) start to experience side effects ranging from painful to psychotic, killing Dr. Mansell and triggering a lockdown of the facility. As the others try to evade their psychotic ones, they also have to worry about succumbing to the effects of the drug themselves. With seemingly no help coming from the outside (and the danger they might pose should they go out in search of help), they try to find out the nature of Pro9 and how to counteract its effects.

Comments

Momentum Picture's dual-layer disc features an attractive anamorphic transfer of this apparently HD-lensed feature as well as appropriately jumpy Dolby Digital 5.1 sound (optional English SDH subtitles are appreciated). The making-of featurette reveals that the film was part of a scheme between Vertigo Films and the National Film and Television School for graduates to produce microbudget features. In keeping with the director's stated character-driven approach to the film, the featurette is structured around his descriptions of the characters and how they drive the plot (interspersed with comments from the actors playing them and some behind the scenes video that offers better looks at the make-up effects than seen in the film). A teaser and trailer are the only other extras apart from some start-up trailers.
